  • Peaceful paddock behind a pub beer garden
  • Friendly country inn popular for miles around
  • Booklets detailing walks starting from the pub
Got noble intentions? Fancy a sizzling Sir Loin steak in peerless scenic surroundings? Make your way at any time of year to the peaceful caravan and camping paddock behind the beer garden at the Baron at Bucknell, set in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty where you can sit back and see red kites soaring overhead and pheasants parading past your pitch. The camping paddock is just steps away from the country inn, which dishes up heart-warmingly tasty and traditional fare, all washed down with a selection from the wine list, Cask Marquee accredited real ale or freshly ground coffee. This friendly pub has people coming to it from miles around for its food and hospitality: the roaring log fire in the lounge and quirky characteristics such as the 1770 apple press in the restaurant might have something to do with it too… The pitches at the Baron are level and on grass, and the pub has a large car park. The site doesn’t have pot-washing facilities or a shower/loo block, but there’s a shower in the well-maintained external disabled toilet, which is available to all campers 24/7 via a coded lock. The pub loos are also in use during opening hours and can be made available to campers when necessary. Baron at Bucknell is a dog-friendly site, with pooches welcome in the beer garden and stable bar (not in the conservatory or restaurant, please) – do remember to be kind to man’s best friend and bring out your foodie scraps.

Local attractions

Lace up your walking boots and bring some spare socks – this southerly part of Shropshire is walking country, and the Baron’s owners have compiled a book showing all the walks that start at the pub, graded according to time and difficulty level. The 176-mile Offa’s Dyke Path passes through Knighton, five miles away and the halfway point of the route: flip a coin here to pick a direction, take off for a day’s happy hiking then come back to town to catch a performance at the Knighton Community Centre. If your idea of walking mainly involves wheeling your clubs around a green, there are several golf clubs within easy distance among the Shropshire scenery: Ludlow Golf Club is the oldest in the Union of Shropshire and Herefordshire; Church Stretton is the third highest course in Britain with views across the Stretton Valley, and Kington Golf Club has the highest 18 hole golf course in England. Sitting sightseers can pedal or canter their way around the many woodland cycle and horse-riding tracks near the Baron or get an adrenaline rush at Bucknell Wood’s new downhill mountain biking course; for true seated sightseeing, hop on the Heart of Wales train at Bucknell for runs between Llanelli and Craven Arms and some spectacular scenery. The market town of Ludlow is 12 miles west of the Baron and has regular events including food and drink festivals, fetes, local produce markets and theatre, as well as Ludlow Racecourse, over 450 listed buildings including the eleventh century Ludlow Castle for history buffs, or cross over to Ironbridge a 45 minute drive away for an industrious look at Britain’s history with at the Ironbridge Gorge museums and meeting the locals at Blists Hill Victorian Town.
