  • Luxury pop-up site with access to The Ridgeway path in Oxfordshire
  • Uffington White Horse 15 minutes’ drive; Barbury Castle 35 minutes
  • Off-grid pitches with clear night skies and views of the chalk downs
An enchanting mix of wildness and glamour – that’s the vibe at pop-up Evelyn’s Garden, sitting just off The Ridgeway path as it wends through Oxfordshire. Surrounded by ancient sites, and hiking trails or cycle routes following a former pilgrimage walk, here you can sleep under bright stars, fall in love with the views and replace your alarm call with the song of the dawn chorus. It’s hard to believe that the shops and restaurants of Wantage are only 15 minutes’ drive away. The glamping accommodation at Evelyn’s Garden is luxurious and highly individual, but is full-on off grid; as this is a completely wild campsite, only a composting toilet and drinking water tap are provided. There are no showers or washing facilities on site. And no electric hook-up, so there are no lights or electrical ports for your devices. Take a break from social media, and bring torches for convenience after dark and thermals for cosiness – and please take all your rubbish home with you. Cooking is done either in the camping kitchen or alfresco on the barbecue (logs, kindling and firelighters can be provided for a charge), and you can cosy up around the campfire after dark, perhaps to the strains of a song or two from fellow guests. Bring your dogs to share in your adventures, but please note they are only allowed to run free on site if their recall is on point – and they must be kept on a lead around the farm due to the free-roaming animals.

Local attractions

Walk sections of the scenic Ridgeway from site, following the chalk hills into the Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. To celebrate all that is ancient and mythical about this corner of Oxfordshire, visit Uffington Castle (15 minutes’ drive) to see the spindly figure of the Uffington White Horse, which was carved into the hillside in prehistoric times. Close by is the Neolithic long barrow and burial chamber of Wayland’s Smithy (15 minutes), while hilltop Barbury Castle is an Iron Age hill fort, and the Hackpen White Horse (both 35 minutes) is a latter-day folly created to commemorate the coronation of Queen Victoria in 1838. For a change of pace (the kids might be getting bored with all those old things), take a shine to the very cute alpacas at JADE Alpaca Ranch (10 minutes), or go pat the donkeys, sheep and goats at the Island Farm Donkey Sanctuary (45 minutes). You can also meet and greet more cuddly animals on the farm trail around Farmer Gow’s (15 minutes).

Unpowered grass tent, campervan or trailer tent site (wild)

Liked: Loved the location and beautiful views. The site is really well maintained by Haley who is a lovely host. You get your own fire-pit with a grill for cooking (as well as logs / kindling etc for a small extra cost) which is a real plus! In spite of what the description says, the site now has a toilet which is one of the cleanest and nicest kept we’ve come across. The real star of the site though is of course… the piggies! At any given moment they’ll come marching into the campsite, looking to tip over anything in their sight, and it’s brilliant. We’d 100% love to stay again!

Disliked: The piggies, while the star of the show, do have a tendency to use the pitch nearest the entrance as their own personal toilet…. As far as we could tell anyway, we couldn’t spot any pig faeces anywhere else on the site. So perhaps any tent pitchers be warned that another pitch might be ideal!

From the manager: Hello! Super happy you enjoyed it here! Im sorry the piglets decided to home in on you guys. They LOVE our guests, but tend to poop where their food is left! (Where you pitched was on the other side of their food trailer! 🥴) So, thanks for the feedback, we have now moved their food well away from the pitches! <<< So our future guest need not to worry, and can still enjoy their piglet visits! 🌸 Thanks Giles Haley and Ursa 🌱

Unpowered grass tent, campervan or trailer tent site (wild)

Liked: Very small site with a beautiful view only a walk away from Wayland smithy. Loved the free roaming piglets.

Disliked: Our neighbours were chatting really loudly and played music, it was restricted to phone speakers but I still found it hard to fall asleep.
