  • Peaceful rural site with panoramic views of the Chiltern Hills
  • On the Ridgeway Trail, less than 30 minutes from Oxford and Reading
  • Dog-friendly site; campfires permitted, with wood for sale
Disconnect from the world and plug in to nature at Ridgeway View Campsite, a spacious, back-to-basics site under 30 minutes by car from both Oxford and Reading. Generous pitches here are surrounded by Oxfordshire wheatfields with the Chiltern Hills beyond. This quiet site takes its name from the ancient trackway it backs onto. Now one of the UK’s popular National Trails, the Ridgeway 87-mile route is known as ‘Britain’s oldest road’ – walk here to follow in the footsteps of 5,000 years' worth of travellers. Less than a mile away, visitors can link up with the wildlife-rich Thames Path too. Also within walking distance (just far enough to build up an appetite for lunch) are several great pubs – plot your routes to take in the hostelries in Crowmarsh Gifford or Hailey. Something a bit more active in mind (or need to get some stress out)? Book a session at Ridgeway View's own axe-throwing range, which is a 15-minute drive away from the site. For stocking up on essentials, taking tea and cake or pottering around the shops, pop to the historic market town of Wallingford (five minutes’ drive), where you should also seek out the blue plaque for famed novelist Agatha Christie (British TV watchers may also recognise the area as the setting for Midsomer Murders). Half an hour’s drive to the north brings you to Oxford, and the same distance south is Reading. Guests have access to just a few back-to-basics facilities, including portable toilets, three cold-water showers and one gas-heated shower. Barbecues and campfires are permitted if raised off the ground – firewood is available to buy, and cooking slabs can be hired. Considerate dog owners are welcome, and there’s plenty of space nearby for the canines to stretch their legs. On the farm, there’s a no-noise policy at night past 10.30pm, so that everyone can enjoy a bit of rural peace.

What customers say

A peaceful, back-to-basics site with heaps of space and lovely country views. Perfect for walkers, straight onto the Ridgeway. Folks liked the simplicity, quiet, and easy check-in. Basic but clean portaloos & cold showers. Fire pits to hire. Some found it windy and basic, but praised the value and chill vibe.

Unpowered grass and earth campervan, tent or trailer tent site

Liked Another great stay at Ridgeway. Escape to the perfect place for anyone looking to forget the stress of day-to-day life.

Highly recommended. We took a leisurely stroll into Ipsden for a pint at the King Billy, then wandered back to the campervan taking in the glorious countryside along the way.

Do it. Get off the sofa and enjoy everything our beautiful countryside has to offer.

Disliked Nothing.

Unpowered grass and earth campervan, tent or trailer tent site

Liked Essentially a massive flat field with spotless portaloos, a sink and some cold alfresco showers. Feels very remote and peaceful. Didn’t meet the owners but very responsive and helpful. Absolute gem of a site if you want to decompress.

Liked Space is huge simple site for campers

Disliked The fires were a bit pricey but good to have

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thanks for the great review.

Unfortunately we had to increase the price of the fire pits to offset the fact that people just help themselves to wood :(

We’ll definitely be back! Back to basics site, clean & beautiful!

Unpowered grass and earth campervan, tent or trailer tent site

Liked Spacious pitches, lovely views over farmland. Direct access to the Ridgeway & miles upon miles of gorgeous walking.
We braved the cold showers after a 3 hour hike along the Ridgeway - bracing!
Easy booking as well as direct contact & speedy responses from Liam at Ridgeway (we were a very large family group so needed to make direct contact prior to booking)
Discount when you camp & book an activity at the Adventure Centre. We booked an axe throwing session & had a great time!
Not far from local amenities but you get the feeling you’re in the middle of nowhere when on site.
Toilets were cleaned & well stocked every day.
Walked to & had Sunday roast at the King William.
We will be back!

Disliked Hard to find things we didn’t like, but I must admit, the price of buying logs on-site was a bit steep at £10 for 4/5 logs a pop. In other places we’ve stayed you get a whole sack (10-15 logs) for £10.
It was very windy one night & we tried to close the shower doors to stop them from swinging open & banging closed during the night but the exterior latches wouldn’t remain secure so it was a bit noisy with the doors banging open & closed.
Other than that, we had a wonderful time!

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thanks Sarah, was a pleasure hosting you and your family.

Sometimes the latches on the showers slip but it's usually an easy fix. If it happens again just call and we can usually walk you through it or send someone out.

Hope to see you again :)

Great if you want no frills, great view and plenty of space.

Local attractions

On a summer’s evening, there’s nothing quite like messing about on the river – hire a boat nearby at Wallingford Bridge or Benson Waterfront (both five minutes' drive). Sipping a glass of wine comes a close second, so Brightwell Vineyard (10 minutes) could be a good shout too. For wildlife enthusiasts, Cholsey Marsh Nature Reserve is 10 minutes away by car or a pleasant hour’s walk taking in the Thames Path along the river. And children (and quite possibly grownups) are bound to love a visit to Island Farm Donkey Sanctuary (15 minutes’ drive). To get the blood pumping, you could brave the local skydiving (five minutes) and watersports (15 minutes) centres.
