  • Angling site with six lakes and the River Idle alongside
  • Regular match venue for coarse fishing, 30 minutes from Sherwood
  • Tackle shop, central amenities and café and licensed restaurant
Spectacular fishing with mighty scenic views... cast off at Nottinghamshire's Hallcroft Fishery and Holiday Park for angling in seven waters on a spacious and well-equipped park. Six lakes are at your fishing disposal here, along with yet more angling in the River Idle which runs alongside the site. You can land bream, eels, roach, tench, perch and varying types of carp at these, including at the huge Moat lake which is a regular venue for matches around its 190 pegs; if you fancy your hand at procuring pike, the river's the place to be. And if you need tackle, kit, bait or any angling advice, a shop for the same is right on site. Hallcroft is two and a half miles from East Retford, about 40 minutes' drive from Newark and half an hour from Sherwood Forest. You can stay solely on site should you so wish: the Kingfisher café and restaurant dishes up full English breakfasts, tea, coffee and toast to sort sustenance before a day's fishing; hot snacks are available some lunchtimes, and evening meals are on offer for after your angling. The restaurant is licensed, to serve boozy beverages during standard pub hours, and a pool table and darts board are to hand too. There are showers and toilets in the centre of the site, part of a good range of amenities including recycling, chemical disposal, a washing-up area and gas cylinder sales.

This tidy, friendly spot's praised for its quiet vibe & nice lake views. Great for anglers & walkers, with a cafe & tackle shop. Spacious pitches, clean loos, near town. Some noted speed bumps & noise, but most loved it & plan to return.

Powered grass site

Liked Hallcroft Holiday Park is a brilliant spot for camping, especially if you're into fishing. The site boasts several lakes stocked with impressively sized fish - mostly doubles - which was exactly what we were hoping for. Whether you're a seasoned angler or just looking for a peaceful lakeside retreat, this place delivers.

Welcoming on-site bar
Although we didn’t personally use the on-site bar, it appeared to be a popular hangout among other guests. It looked like a great option for socialising or simply relaxing indoors, especially on rainy days when outdoor plans might be disrupted.

Friendly and helpful staff
The reception team were incredibly accommodating. They made sure we had two pitches located conveniently near the fishing lakes, the toilet facilities, and right next to our other booking. Their attention to detail and warm hospitality made our stay even more enjoyable.

Ideal for Doncaster racegoers
If you're heading to Doncaster races, Hallcroft is a perfect base. We stayed here twice this year and found it super convenient, with taxis to the racecourse costing around £30 each way. It’s a great way to combine countryside camping with a day at the races.

Disliked Limited and unreliable showers
One major drawback was the shower situation. With only four showers available, they struggled to function properly - especially when more than one was in use. For a site of this size, the facilities felt inadequate and frustrating.

Toilets and showers need attention
Cleanliness was another issue. The shower and toilet blocks weren’t cleaned regularly enough, leaving most of them muddy and in need of an upgrade. A bit more care and maintenance here would go a long way in improving the overall experience.

Extra Charges for Fishing
Paying extra for fishing on top of the camping fee felt unreasonable. The camping itself is already on the pricier side, and adding more costs - especially when the best fishing pool is often booked out for matches and unavailable to regular guests - was disappointing.

Poor tent ground conditions
The ground for pitching tents was tough and bare, with no grass and rock-hard soil. While the drought may have played a part, the area could still be better maintained to make camping more comfortable.

Great Potential but needs investment
Hallcroft Holiday Park has the potential to be one of the best sites around, but it needs investment. Free fishing for campers, upgraded shower and toilet facilities, better-maintained pitches, and a clubhouse with entertainment like bingo would elevate the experience dramatically.

Fully-serviced gravel caravan site

Liked We really liked this site good fishing spots
Good little park for the kids. Spacious pitchs. And we liked that it's close to shops and a little town with a good few shops. Showers and toilets weren't too bad and could be a bit cleaner but not as bad as some. They need more showers too, so we're not waiting to have a shower. I would definitely come again. I'd definitely come again.

Disliked The only downside to this site is them speed humps theres about 12 going all the way down it really isn't good for caravans. One day, somones going to damage something despite how slow they are going over them. And also every morning got woke up by ducks I wasn't pleased about that. One night, we had people arguing at 2.30 a.m., absolutely shouting her mouth of swearing and her little child absolutely screaming her head off because he was frightened to death. if I was the site owner/ manager, I would have sent them off-site the following morning. It was absolutely embarrassing for an adult woman to be going off like that. I guess that's not the sites fault, just people that can't handle their drink.

Unpowered grass site

Liked The fishing was good and the staff at the cafe and out on the site were friendly and helpful. The cafe and bar did nice breakfasts. The toilets were generally quite clean although over the weekend when it was busy they did get a bit dirty. Retford was close by and had everything you could want in terms of shops and pubs and was pretty. The Sherwood Pub was particularly good.

Disliked There was a bit of a dumping ground to the back of the non-electric which wasn't very pretty. It's worth noting that there is nowhere to freeze cool blocks which make non-electric camping tricky however it does state this in the amenities part of the pitch up site and I should have noticed it.The fishing itself was good however there were matches on almost all the time.we were there which was disappointing as this left only two smaller poorer lakes to fish.

Local attractions

After your angling, take the kids to Sundown Adventureland (20 minutes' drive), a theme and play park for under-10s with rides and attractions of all sorts including an intriguingly-named ostrich safari ride. (You may or may not opt to let the kids know a pet shop is at the park too...) For a calmer time, the National Trust and Grade I-listed Clumber Park is 25 minutes from Hallcroft, for peaceful potters around its 3,800 acres. It's the former home of the Duke of Newcastle, so ponder on how the other half live during your scenic strolls, or hire a bike to pedal around the woodland and lake. National Cycle Route 6 connects Clumber Park with fab Sherwood Forest, along a path of almost seven miles. If you'd prefer to stay closer to home, Hallcroft is next to the biking and hiking of the Idle Valley Nature Reserve, an excellent birdwatching spot.
