  • Small friendly site on the A17, 10 minutes' drive from Sleaford
  • Lincoln within half an hour's drive; level and well-drained location
  • On the Ermine Way and Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Trail
What a handsomely historic location the hamlet of Byards Leap has, for it's between ancient Lincoln and the old market towns of Sleaford, Newark and Grantham, on an aged Roman road and is the setting of ye olde Byards Leap legend dating back centuries (Byard was a high-jumping horse, in case you're wondering). And the Knights Templar used to hang out around here too… Folks use The Beeches site in the hamlet as a base to explore historic Lincolnshire or as a stopover enroute to Norfolk or the east coast: plenty of history around in those there parts too. Next to the A17, it's a small and friendly site, level, grassy and well drained, with rather nice views over Lincolnshire farmland; access to the Ermine Way is straight from the site. The Beeches has a play area and disabled-friendly amenities, a few steps from the pitching area. It's next to the Byards Leap café which dishes up excellent breakfasts and lunches from Thursday to Sunday; a handful of good pubs and restaurants are within a five-mile radius too. Dogs are welcome at The Beeches – and the folk here recommend old Roman road Ermine Street as a top spot for walkies.

Liked We thought the camp site was lovely. Very basic and rustic but pretty. The people who run it were helpful and pleasant.

Disliked The toilets and showers. One shower in each was definitely not enough for when the camp is busy. Not enough toilets and they were smelly. Both toilets and showers definitely need updating.

From the manager: Stephen, many thanks for posting a review on The Beeches. We are a friendly bunch who are helpful and bend over backwards to make your stay more enjoyable.

We have totally revamped the toilet and shower block building in the past winter and this includes the showers and all of the insides including the toilets too. We do not own the structures as these are leased to us so adding extra showers is not an option just now. Unfortunately, some people leave the toilets in a not very nice state and we have subsequently checking these more frequently as a result. Thank you for bring this to our attention.

Liked Easy to book

Disliked The site was crowded, quite scruffy with lots of uncut pitches. I was given a piece of bare earth with no grass to pitch on, there was constant traffic noise, one of the neighbours played music until midnight

From the manager: Kerry, thank you for leaving a review on our site. Firstly we are glad you found us easy to book with.
Secondly and more important. Yes we have been busy on our site as we are popular. I’m not sure where you’ve been recently as most or nearly all campsites are experiencing dry spells. Having lush green grass is one thing we do have the time nor finances to tend to. Not sure about uncut pitches as these are cut regularly. At least you had a temporary hard standing (not of our making) for your stay, we have had motorhomes dug in to the grass on occasions. Thankfully this did not happen to you. On our bio and statement we do not hide the fact that we are close to the A17 and for those who are not used to road noise this can be a problem and it sounds like it was for you. As for your neighbour playing loud music, did you report this? We can enforce only if we know about it at the time. As we are a family orientated site, we probably do not meet your stringent requirements and we wish you well to find a perfect campsite which is silent, empty and ticks all of your boxes. Maybe your expectation was too high when with us.

Liked What a lovely site! Very warm friendly welcome. Lovely play area which our granddaughter loved. Facilities are very clean, bins emptied regularly, spacious pitches. To anyone worried about road noise don’t be. The road is well hidden by trees & bushes which blocks it to a degree & what you can hear you tune out of anyway. We honestly hardly noticed it & it didn’t interrupt us through the night or anything. There is also a lovely cafe at the entrance to the site where we went for breakfast, again very friendly & the food was good quality & well cooked.

We would definitely recommend this site

From the manager: Karen, many thanks for leaving us a review. We take great pride in what we do here and it’s lovely to know we are getting things right. We do like to welcome everyone in the same way and are aimed at families hence why we have the amount of play park equipment we do. Our ethos throughout the team is to be friendly and approachable.
I’m glad you did not feel the raid was a problem as it is well documented and does reduce our overall scores for a lot of people. I guess it’s down to what you are used to and this is valid. The cafe owned by Chèle and Max is a great facility on our doorstep and we regularly get positive feedback about them which is given to them. We would welcome you back to stay with us should you be in the area and thank you again for your kind comments.

Great value

Disliked Proximity to noisy main road - not visible but so noisy - better on back field further away.

From the manager: Dear Anonymous, thank you for taking the time to leave a review on The Beeches.
Although the site is on a slight gradient overall, we do try to keep pitches as level as we can. The campsite facilities we have are kept meticulously clean and these are checked throughout the day ensuring nothing runs out. Our prices are competitive alongside other campsites in the same area.
Yes, we are located next to the A17 and we do publicise this in our communications. It can be so noisy at times and there is not very much we can do to reduce the amount of noise. It is however, closer on the back field to the main road as only a hedge separates it from the road at the top. Thank you again for taking the time to leave the review on our site.

Our first time camping however great little site and will return.

From the manager: Ben, thank you for taking the time to post a review on The Beeches. You clearly do get our ethos and understand what we are trying to achieve. We are a family orientated site and this is not always to everyone’s liking. We are so glad you chose us to experience your first camping trip as we like to leave great impressions on families who are new to camping. We’d welcome you back to the Beeches anytime.

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked Helpful staff. Great play area for kids. Good toilet and shower (though I had to wait a while as there’s only 1, but it was free). Good value for money. Easy drive to Lincoln and Grantham.

Disliked No one’s fault, but it is noisy being next to the A17. You get used to it though. Some noisy neighbours who didn’t settle down by the staff. Had a bit of an ant infestation which the owners claimed was normal, being outside, but they did provide some spray which helped.

From the manager: Dear Anonymous, thank you for leaving a review on our campsite. Yes we are helpful in every way. Our facilities we recently upgraded are free to those who stay with us but due to their popularity, and can be busy but sometimes there is a bit of a wait especially first thing in the morning. We do take pride on how competitive we are fees wise and yes we are centrally placed in respect of most places locally.
Yes, we are located very close to the A17. As for the noisy neighbours, we did deal with them but as you know some people have minds of their own but we have had communication back from them they will not be returning. With respect to this, you feel that The Beeches is not for you and although we try to resolve ant problems, this is not always possible. We always try to do our best, end of.

Liked The park was a great hit with the kids and lots of shade for our dog. Toilets were clean and pitch sizes were really good. Easy to fine and a lovely welcome from the lady who runs the site they really are trying to turn it into a lovely family friendly site.

Disliked As others have said the A17 road noise was to loud for us but great if your using it as a base for activities around the area. My biggest dislike is for a family friendly site I think 11pm is to late for everyone quietening down. 10.20pm still really loud music and kids screaming and playing right outside our tent. My kids struggled to sleep with the noise still going on til late.

From the manager: Janine, many thanks for leaving a review on our site. We do take great pride in the children’s play park and our cleaning schedules ensure that the toilets and showers ar kept meticulously checked and kept clean. We are a family orientated site. You are right that 1020pm having loud music and being disrespectful to other campers is not what you expect but as I spoke to you about this, it has been rectified with those who were causing the rumpus. We understand that not everyone is “ a courteous and considerate camper”. This will not be tolerated under any circumstances and goes against our ethics onsite. Thank you for being honest with us in bringing this to our attention.

Unpowered grass caravan site

Liked This is a relaxed, family friendly site. (Though free range children may not be everyone's idea of fun). There's a small, basic wash block with showers.
It's good value. And was an easy place to stop for a night.

From the manager: Neil, many thanks for taking the time to leave us a review. You are absolutely right that we are a relaxed, family friendly site. That is always at the centre of what we’re all about. We do encourage children to be children and make great memories in the outdoors but we also discourage bad behaviour and this includes adults too. We have just renovated the shower block this last winter and this is the first year it is being used in its modern and updated format. We do also like to remain competitive price wise, so that you for the feedback on this. The new road signs we had made are finally making us easier to find?
Many thanks again for your unbiased review as we do like to hear how we’ve done but where we can improve.

Liked Loved the facilities, the playground was brilliant too.

From the manager: Kerry, thank you so much for leaving a review on The Beeches. We do take great pride in our facilities which are aimed at families and he playground is the nucleus of the site and the one we have spent a lot of time, thought, effort and finances getting right. We take onboard your feedback on ants. This is unfortunately an ongoing problem which we try to fix but alas Mother Nature has other ideas. Thank you for your kind comments and we’d love to see you back staying with us again soon.

Liked Love this campsite 🏕️
We have returned twice and will be booking again soon 🌲
The play area keeps the children so entertained and the staff are so lovely and helpful 💜
We enjoy it as it’s only a small campsite so the children can play freely and you know they are safe and we love sitting around the camp fire at night, it’s not camping without a fire 🔥

Disliked I think the only downfall is the showers. There is only 1 shower in each and it can be a squeeze when you are in there with children. Plus there is no shower mat or tray when you get out so when it is busy you get dirty feet as soon as you step out 🙈 maybe a suggestion of a shower mat for inside the shower and a wooden tray for when you step out or a mop/bucket kept in the toilet area so people can quickly mop before and after 🥰

From the manager: Jordan, many thanks for taking the time to leave a review on The Beeches.
We have concentrated a lot on the children’s play park equipment as well as completely renovating the toilet and shower block over the closed season. You are so right about it not being camping without a fire!
We take your comments onboard about the showers and will aim to rectify this to a better solution although we do have plans to already do at least one of your suggestions to help things. I’ll be checking on the state of showers more regularly as well the rest of the team to ensure we keep on top of this. Thanks again and we look forward to seeing you again very soon.

Local attractions

Pick up details of local walks, cycle routes and town maps as well as leaflets and tourist info on site: there's quite a bit to do all around. A mix of quiet roads and bridleways linking the area's Lincolnshire villages means there's quite a bit to see if you want to get around by foot, pedal or horse. As well as being on the Ermine Way, The Beeches is also on the Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Trail and is close to the RAF Cranwell Heritage Centre and the Newark Air Museum. The Newark Showground is nearby too for shows, displays and events. Plenty more history is at Lincoln – see the castle and cathedral if you only have time for two things – and at nearby National Trust properties like Grantham House and Tattershall Castle. Or take trips around Lincolnshire's old towns, like Sleaford, a market town since the twelfth century; Grantham, where Isaac Newton went to school, and Newark, besieged by the roundy-headed ones in the English Civil War.
