  • Countryside pub with open views of the Lincolnshire Wolds
  • Walkers' paradise with easy access to trails including the Viking Way
  • Friendly vibe with pub food, board games and walking maps
If you're an intrepid wanderer, the knowledgeable team at The Three Horseshoes near Louth in Lincolnshire reckons a foray onto the Viking Way is a must. How lucky, then, that this fab and historic path along the route of the Norse invaders of yesteryear can be accessed a short drive from the pub – one of many paths in the region for you to tramp. If you're not quite up for traversing the full length of the Way from a Three Horseshoes stay (it runs for 147 miles from the Humber Bridge in north Lincs to Oakham in Rutland), several more strolling and hiking paths are around this Lincolnshire Wolds locale to try instead. There's the stunning setting of the Lincolnshire Wolds Area of Outstanding Beauty, or you could wander the Silver Lincs Way to Grimsby from nearby Louth, or tackle the Macmillan Way, Lindsey Way and the tastily-named Gingerbread Way, just to start you off. Not into walkies? Trot along to days out at Cadwell Park or Market Rasen Racecourse, both within easy reach. The site promotes a relaxed atmosphere where guests are welcome to have a campfire by their pitch and chill out among the handsome views. (Firepits, wood and kindling are available to buy, so please don't bring your own.) A friendly atmosphere also prevails in the pub, where you can tuck into good food and real ales, or settle in with the table and board games on a rainy day; plenty of walking leaflets and maps are here too for planning your next route. The team ensures its amenities are modern and well maintained; the shower and toilet block has been refitted and updated.

All-season power optional grass and gravel caravan site

Liked: Hardstanding pitch, it was fairly level. Pub is great has a very friendly atmosphere and loads of games/books.

Disliked: All serviced pitch consisted of electric supply, no water or grey waste. Pub was only open of an evening with limited food choices… pizza on both nights. Site is extremely isolated. Felt more isolated with the pub being closed most of the time. Toilets and showers weren’t cleaned during the two nights we stayed… grubby. WiFi only available at the pub. Out of season/low season this site is best treated as a base/pitch only. Take everything you need… food and drink. If you have a self contained unit all the better. Check what’s open before you go and if and what they are serving food wise. Electric meter… non refundable and it goes a long way. Two nights was less than £7.50 running hot water, electric heater and lights etc. Don’t overpay on the card.

Camping pod (deluxe, four person)

Liked: The pod we stayed in was perfect ; having a shower and a toilet made a huge difference especially when it was so rainy ! Immaculate site and very friendly hosts . Pub was quaint and they stocked books , games and dvds which was great for the kids

Disliked: Shame that the pub only serves food Wednesday to Sunday and we stayed Monday and Tuesday ; next time we will make sure we get to experience what other glampers told us is ‘amazing food’

Milly Micro camping pod (two person)

Liked: Tidiness, cute looking accommodation, in house pub & restaurant, lovely staff, a separate kitchen facility for self cooking

Disliked: The pod we hired didn’t have duvet and pillows as advertised in pitchup, Male toilets should have an encouraging notice sign to wash hands after toilets.

Liked: My family thoroughly enjoyed our weekend stay. The pub wasn't great and the site had good facilities. It is not the biggest campsite but we liked that. We hope to visit again next year.

Local attractions

This land is made for walking… recommended as well as the Viking Way are the 76 miles of the Lincs Wold Way, meandering around the best of the area's spectacular scenery; the 96-mile Wolds trail of the Lindsey Loop, and the easy three-mile amble of the Spa Trail, a family-friendly and wheelchair/buggy-accessible path along the banks of the Horncastle Canal. Less than 10 minutes' drive away is the motor racing circuit of Cadwell Park, with its many car and bike events throughout the year including the super-bikes weekend over the August bank holiday. Market Rasen Racecourse and its active racing calendar is about 20 minutes away by car. The best-known nearby town is Louth, a busy Lincolnshire Wolds market town with independent shops, pubs, restaurants and award-wining butchers and grocers. If you still yearn for a walk, follow the canal towpath for the scenic hike along to Tetney Lock, or drive just outside town to the six acres of the Rushmoor Country Park farm park.
