  • Waterside lodges at a Leicestershire glampsite with four fishing lakes
  • Foxton Locks and Lutterworth 15 minutes’ drive; Leicester half an hour
  • Tackle shop, fishing lessons, on-site café; pubs five minutes’ drive
Get your bags packed, all you keen anglers, and make haste to Shearsby Valley Lakes, 15 minutes’ drive from the pretty market town of Lutterworth in Leicestershire. Here you can book a waterside lodge and fish to your heart’s content in one of four lakes stocked with the likes of tench, carp and barbel. No need to worry if you’ve left anything vital behind either, as all your fishing needs – from bait to lines – can be replaced in the site’s tackle shop. And if you need to brush up on your angling skills, lessons and coaching are available too. But what of your accommodation on this quiet, child- and dog-free site? Each lodge has lake views, a double bedroom, open-plan living and dining space, an ensuite and a compact, well-equipped kitchenette. Outside is a small private garden for dining alfresco on balmy days. No doubt you’ll be pleased to hear that the on-site Shearsby Valley Café (closed Monday) is open for breakfast fry-ups, lunchtime burgers (takeaway also available) and assorted alcoholic or soft drinks. If you’re looking for somewhere to eat locally, Fleckney (five minutes’ drive) turns up an assortment of pubs and takeaways, and when you fancy eating in at night, you can pick up groceries from the village’s small supermarket. For more shopping, try out Fosse Park (20 minutes), Elliott's Field Retail Park (25 minutes) or Leicester city centre (25 minutes). Handily, the site is only 10 minutes' drive away from the M1 in Lutterworth too.

Local attractions

Don’t want to be fishing all day, every day? Stay close to the water when you see an old-fashioned boat lift in action in the open-air Foxton Canal Museum (15 minutes’ drive), where you can take traditional barge trips along the Grand Union Canal or walk up the longest, steepest lock flight in the UK, built in 1810 by stellar engineer Benjamin Bevan. There’s more history to be found in Classic British Jets Museum (five minutes) or the King Richard III Visitor Centre in Leicester (half an hour), where there are interactive exhibits detailing the discovery of the Plantagenet king’s unmarked grave in a car park in 2012. For more on Richard’s story, pop into the half-timbered Guildhall Museum, adorned with fine stained-glass and ornate wooden wall panels. If you want to get your heart racing, try steering military vehicles over a former World War II bombing range at Armourgeddon Tank Driving (10 minutes), where there's also paintballing, or whizz around a few laps at Sutton Circuit Outdoor Go-Karting (20 minutes). An adventure golf course in Blaby (15 minutes), Wistow Maze (10 minutes) or a golf course in Lutterworth (15 minutes) are also nearby. If gentle pursuits are the name of the day, take the binoculars to Saddington Reservoir (five minutes) and keep your eyes open for egrets, herons and grebes as you meander around the water’s edge. Bradgate Park (45 minutes) is another fab spot, as is Rutland Water (45 minutes). Shearsby Bath (under five minutes) is a local wedding and events venue.
