  • Quiet family-friendly site at the rear of a Leicestershire country pub
  • Calke Abbey Estate and Donington Park Circuit both 15 minutes’ drive
  • Restaurant with a bar, beer garden and occasional live entertainment
Looking for a quiet Leicestershire bolthole in the National Forest? Your search is over. Kingsmoor Retreat is a well-kept site with grass pitches at the rear of a country pub and restaurant, 10 minutes’ drive from Coalville and 15 minutes from East Midlands Airport if you’ve got an early flight. If you feel the urge to do some alfresco cooking, barbecues are allowed on site, and there are picnic tables for alfresco meals. There’s also a communal area with a firepit where you can cosy up with family and friends. However, the neighbouring pub may be too much temptation, beckoning you in with its local ales and menu of family favourites. There’s a beer garden for warmer days, live bands on occasion and a cosy snug heated by woodburner for chillier days. The leisure centre in Coalville has a gym, swimming pool and café (a great option for keeping kids happy if the weather goes rogue on you), and close by is a very swanky spa (10 minutes) for when you’re in need of some TLC. There are also plenty of walks to access from your pitch in the National Forest, which should keep you – and any accompanying dogs – well exercised. Practical facilities include public showers, toilets and blue water waste disposal.

What customers say

A clean, friendly spot with a great pub. Staff are a highlight – super welcoming. Pitches are mostly flat and tidy, though some found them a bit close. Hot water and bin issues sorted. A few mentioned noise and occasional facility cleaning.

Liked Tidy, well kept site. The pub staff were friendly and helpful. The food was also good. The shower cubicles were very spacious, but see below.

Disliked The Pitchup site states WiFi but doesn’t mention that it’s for the Glamping Pods only. The pub has free wifi. Although the shower cubicles are large, the Portacabins they are housed in are small and cold. The site is better in colder seasons for caravans and RVS with their own facilities rather than campers. I’m not sure what was meant by by the gates being locked at night to keep undesirables out!

Local attractions

There’s plenty to keep you all occupied in this corner of Leicestershire. Wildlife lovers can head for Kelham Bridge Nature Reserve (10 minutes’ drive) to spot moorhens, sandpipers and kingfishers flitting around the waterways, and maybe the occasional otter. Sence Valley Forest Park (also 10 minutes) has hiking and cycling routes on woodland and pond-side tracks, and you can often see swans floating on the water. Family adventures with a cultural bent could include a visit to Bosworth Battlefield Heritage Centre (25 minutes) to see the 15th-century site where King Richard III fell. You can walk across parkland and see the main house falling into decline at National Trust - Calke Abbey Estate (15 minutes), and there are still monks living at Mount St Bernard Abbey (10 minutes), where you can sample beer in the working brewery and pick up souvenirs in the gift shop. If the kids are resistant to heritage stuff, a day discovering orangutans, tigers and The Gruffalo in Discovery Land at Twycross Zoo (15 minutes) should put a smile back on their faces. When your holiday dates coincide with an event at Donington Park Circuit (also 15 minutes), you’ll be able to watch bike and car racing too.
