  • Peaceful site on a farm just 20 minutes by train from central London
  • White-water rafting, go-karts and a zoo within a 20-minute drive
  • Pre-erected bell tents; tennis and golf within five minutes' walk
Fancy a speedy weekend break from London? The Old Quarry at Colesdale Farm fits the bill, with totally rural surroundings in Hertfordshire, yet just 20 minutes by train from the big smoke – and what’s more, the level grass site is located in the middle of an old working farm. So what could be better for a quick getaway from London? Wooden utility blocks with hot showers and flushing loos? Masses of space to spread out, so you won’t feel on top of your neighbours? Or the fact that your well-behaved canine pals can share your holiday too? Perhaps it’s the views? The upper heights of the Old Quarry boast some smashing views of the surrounding area, in a rare and peaceful landscape you don’t find very often so close to London. And it really is close – on clear nights you can even see The Shard and other city-centre skyscrapers far in the distance. It’s five minutes’ drive into Cuffley to pick up basics for the barbecue from the small supermarket – but there’s no real need to spark up the grill, though, as there is a foodie pub within five minutes’ walk. You can leave the car by your pitch and have a proper night out without worrying about driving back to base.

Local attractions

If you’ve brought the kids on your Hertfordshire mini break, you won’t know where to start. Treat them to tractor rides and soft play at Willows Activity Farm (25 minutes' drive), let them pet goats and guinea pigs at Paradise Wildlife Park (15 minutes), or head off excess energy on the white-water rowing courses at Lee Valley White Water Centre (15 minutes) or go-kart races at Rye House Kart Raceway (25 minutes). For more sedate games of tennis, there’s a club at Cuffley, within five minutes’ walk of the campsite, and a golf course there too – and in fact you can hone your swing at numerous courses within half an hour’s drive. Fancy a country walk with a bit of history thrown in? National Trust-owned Morven Park has a stately white mansion and several acres of woodland to explore, while the 17th-century house at Forty Hall and Estate features a decorative-arts museum and landscaped gardens to wander. Both are 10 minutes' drive away.

Liked: Very basic site. You’re free to do as you please, pitch up anywhere and no one to bother you. We were able to play music until 5am and no one was close enough to hear it. Showers were hot

Disliked: The owner laughed at me when I asked where the charging outlet was that was advertised on the website. There’s also not BBQs as described on the website. These were some of the reasons we booked this site. The toilets aren’t great or well maintained. It’s also not a 5 minute walk to the nearest pub as advertised, if walking from the entrance of the site to the campsite is about 30 mins, and it’s about 5-10 minute drive so would be much longer walk

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked: Great little campsite; very helpful hosts; felt very secure.

Disliked: not really a dislike as such - the track to the camping field gets very muddly and slippy following rain fall made worse by lots of holes to get stuck in. Would be great if the "track" could be made a little more 'car friendly'.

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked: Quiet at night.

Disliked: The spaces were pre allocated and very close together. The campsite was incredibly busy with large groups of young people. The facilitates were horrendous, there was one portaloo for a full campsite of people and no washing up facilities. There were 2 outdoor showers that looked reasonably clean yet we wanted to leave as soon as possible in the morning due to the lack of the toilet and other facilities. Incredibly disappointing stay, and definitely not a campsite for people looking for a nice break away!

Liked: A lot of space around the camp site, toilet was clean & always full of Andrex which is always a bonus. Fire pit & pallets provided certainly helped the experience & 24 hour security with someone on the gates as well as the codes to get through is a huge thumbs up from me. All around Nice experience!

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked: Price was very reasonable, portaloo and showers were clean. Secure access via some gates but was tedious to keep opening a padlock when leaving and arriving with not much space to park off the main road while wrestling with the gate.

Disliked: Long off road track to access the camping field which was very tedious to navigate with my car, a 4x4 or SUV would have suited better. Very busy field. Possibly over booked as there were a number of events in the local area and all but one pitch was taken when we arrived in the early afternoon. We noticed one family with children pack up and leave early. We did not stay for both of the nights that we had booked due to the level of noise from the over exited neighbours, decided to leave after one night so we could head home and get some sleep.
