  • Forest of Dean and River Wye canoe trips within a 15-minute drive
  • Barbecues provided; three excellent pubs within walking distance
For many folk, there’s nowt finer in life than a day spent rambling through gorgeous rural scenery, followed up by a country pub dinner (and possibly a pint or two…). Such sensible types will most likely be highly approving of days spent around Darnells Farm Luxury Glamping, 15 minutes’ drive from Ross-on-Wye. The scenic surrounds here are a pretty part of Herefordshire (and one that’s easily accessed, being just a mile from the M50), with walks and bike rides galore nearby. The Forest of Dean, Malvern Hills and Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty are all within a 15-minute drive for planning numerous such outings; for a change of muscle power, you might like to wend your way down the Wye in canoes from Ross-on-Wye. Need a little incentive to propel you along your chosen route? If the promise of a pub dinner would do the trick, take your pick from three excellent hostelries within walking distance of the site. Legs out of steps for the day? Stick around on site to get the barbecue going or cook something in your kitchenette. The smart glamping setup here means that lots of little extras are taken care of: each unit has its own ensuite bathroom, underfloor heating to warm chilly toes, and a good pile of fancy towels and bed linen. There’s also a TV and sofa in each one for times when your outings have left you in need of a bit of comfy chillout time.

Local attractions

The Forest of Dean (15 minutes’ drive) is a fab place to start if you’re looking for scenic strolls. If you can’t pick from the many miles of trail on offer, perhaps choose one with a theme: the Forest of Dean Sculpture Trail is a popular one for arty types, and the Highway Rat Trail for families on foot. If you’re after a bit more adventure, shin up into the trees at the Go Ape treetop park (25 minutes’ drive) or don protective gear for caving and climbing outings from Coleford (half an hour). Paddling a canoe is another fave around these parts: hire your vessel in Ross-on-Wye for watery sightseeing – depending on how far your trip takes you, you may spot Goodrich Castle and Symonds Yat Rock as you go (and if not, you can drive to either in around 25 minutes). If it’s time for a bit of respite from all the activity, plan more peaceful days at the International Centre for Birds of Prey (15 minutes) or Wye Valley Butterfly Zoo (20 minutes), or take a beery tour of Hillside Brewery (15 minutes).

Camping pod

Liked: Loved everything about my stay. Had a very warm welcome from the owner who also bought complimentary breakfast on the last morning. The pod was spotless and had everything needed. The bed was so comfortable I slept better than I do at home! The view from the decking was beautiful. I was actually staying as was working in the area, but I've come back as relaxed as if I'd been on holiday. Was amazed to have full 4g too. Wonderful place thankyou, I will be back!!

Disliked: Nothing, it was perfect.
