  • Herefordshire farm site between an ancient church and River Wye
  • Hay-on-Wye and Hereford within 25 minutes' drive
  • Access to the river for fishing, watersports and nature spotting
A major draw of a stay in the Herefordshire countryside is the chance to explore the River Wye – whether that be on a paddleboard, in a canoe or kayak or sticking to the riverbanks for a long walk. All of the above options are readily available to you when you stay at Preston Campsite, as this special spot is part of a farm that sits right on the banks of the river, just under a mile from the village of Preston on Wye. That location means that you’ll have access to the river for various watersports – and in fact there’s a paddleboard hire and coaching outfit just a couple of minutes’ walk away. It doesn’t all have to be active though – being based right by the water also means you can simply sit right there and keep your eyes peeled for local wildlife (perhaps swans gliding along the river or hares peeking out from the grass). There’s also the chance to do a bit of fishing – this is a popular spot for both salmon and coarse fishing, and the site is able to accommodate up to five people fishing on its banks at any one time (you’ll just need to hold the correct rod licence and pay for a fishing session). And of course the river isn’t the only attraction around these parts – settle in for a stay here and you’ll be in a good position for a visit to Hay-on-Wye or Hereford, a walk in the eastern part of the Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) National Park or some time strolling around the pretty pathways of nearby gardens such as The Weir Garden.

Liked: Spacious pitches, beautiful views and friendly atmosphere

Disliked: Could do with better facilities for the non glamping field and a better tap for filling up with water, but made do. Logs bought from the owner were very pricey but nice to be able to have a campfire.

Route directions

what3words location: ///snaps.reefs.films If you are coming from Preston-on-Wye, travel all the way through the village and continue for just under a mile. You will pass over a small red brick bridge and down a slight hill. At the bottom of the slope the road turns sharply left. Turn off the road here to the right, passing a triangle green to your left, and a large pool on your right. Turn into the first gate on the left, which is the farm gate. In the farmyard, drive through the next get in front of you, with the church on the right. Follow the path through the next gate and look out for signs directing you to either the campsite (go left) or glamping (go straight on).

Local attractions

The scenery around here is rather lovely, and there are several ways to explore it, including playing a round at a local golf club or taking a walk to historic landmarks like Arthur’s Stone, five miles away. If it’s hiking you’re into, it may also be handy to know that the Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) National Park is about 25 minutes’ drive away too. Also on the banks of the river are the town of Hay-on-Wye and the city of Hereford. Both are about 25 minutes’ drive away and well worth a trip – the former for its many bookshops and the latter for attractions like the Mappa Mundi exhibition and the Black and White House Museum. If it’s green views you’re after, turn your attentions instead to the likes of Brobury House Gardens and National Trust - The Weir Garden (both 15 minutes’ drive). The Small Breeds Farm Park (25 minutes) is a popular pick for kids, as it’s got all sorts of cute animals to meet and greet.
