  • Shepherd's hut in a peaceful field 10 minutes' drive from Ledbury
  • Short walk to Herefordshire Trail; Eastnor Castle 10 mins' drive
  • Luxury sauna, firepit, woodburner and ensuite bathroom
Some folk head to this corner of Herefordshire for hikes and other outdoor activities, while others are simply in search of somewhere to relax in gorgeous rural surroundings. Whichever category you fall into, you’ll have a splendid base at Upper House Glamping, where a single shepherd’s hut sits in a field location just under 10 minutes’ drive from Ledbury. This is a deceptive little place with the peaceful vibe of an off-grid cabin but all the amenities of a luxury stay (it’s fully connected to mains electricity and water and even has a proper flushing loo…) The countryside around here is simply gorgeous, and you’ll have plenty of ways to enjoy it. If you’re feeling active, head out for a walk on the Herefordshire Trail (only one field away) or take to the River Wye for a canoe trip. More of a chilling out mood? There are 270-degree views all round the hut, so you can still soak it all up even when stretched out in the hammock, or stoking the firepit with a beer in hand… Everything’s been well thought out inside the hut too, if you’d rather just cosy up for a bit. There’s a mega-comfy double bed, an ensuite bathroom and a mini kitchen with cooker, fridge and sink, plus superfast wifi to help you add a little music to the mix. Keeping warm shouldn’t be a problem, as there’s a woodburner and a luxury sauna. Staying fed is similarly easy, as you’ll be provided with a breakfast basket (vegan option available) and a barbecue to cook on.

Local attractions

You’ll probably pop into Ledbury (10 minutes’ drive) at some point for the shops or a meal – but it's worth planning a longer wander too as the market town is a cute little place with lots of cobbled alleys and half-timbered houses to see. The black and white Market House is a must-see, especially if you can time your trip for when stalls set up there on Tuesdays and Saturdays. For more lovely buildings, head to Hellens (five minutes) to see one of England’s oldest dwellings, and then on to explore the historic collections and extensive deer park at Eastnor Castle (10 minutes). The Three Choirs Vineyard (10 minutes) may well appeal too if you fancy sampling some of the area’s (and indeed the country’s) top tipples. Sticking with the outdoors, it’s a short stroll across the next field to pick up the long-distance Herefordshire Trail, or a drive of 15 minutes or so to get to the Malvern Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Ross-on-Wye (20 minutes) is the place to go if you’d like to see some of the Wye Valley from a canoe trip.
