Small tents pitch, less than a minute's walk from the pub

  • Riverside inn on the edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park
  • Nine miles from Hay-on-Wye
  • Dozens of walks starting straight from the site
A riverside inn, at the bottom of the Black Mountains, and flanked by the Brecon Beacons National Park: you might reckon there's an excellent amount of hiking and biking around Herefordshire site Bridge Inn Camping Site. You'd be entirely correct – and as it's based at a pub, refreshments after a hearty hike/bike ride will be a fine option too. And if you don't want to hike or bike? First of all, pfffft, as this is a smashing countryside setting for both, but if your tastes do tend towards the more placid while on hol, the book-heavy town of Hay-on-Wye is a mere nine miles away for picking up many (many) volumes; and for sightseeing, cathedral city Hereford is around 15 miles from the pub. The drinks and food at the Bridge Inn have been lauded by many traveller types, so if you're a carnivore, do tuck into their well-regarded juicy steaks… The team's pretty knowledgeable about what's on offer hikewise around the area too: check out the dozens of local walks in the pub folder to plot where you'll be off to next. The pub provides an off-grid experience rather than a fully functioning campsite; there are pub toilets available 24/7 but there are no showers on site.

Liked: Beautiful location, fabulous pub with great service and food. Very friendly welcome too. Showers were excellent. Good value for money. We're coming back....

Disliked: Couldn't find an elsan point. Lack of wifi, but we knew this would be the case, so not a problem! Let's be honest, we all need more time off our phones anyway....

Liked: Hot showers, water and ehu

Disliked: Not well kept at all… if I hadn’t done in to the pub to say we’d arrived we’d have had no contact at all from owners..No proper bin so bathroom bins overflowing with food and waste, and not emptied for days, horrible filthy rags and filthy mop to ‘clean shower after use’!, nowhere to put the washing up whilst doing it, drain cleaner and other noxious products in unlocked cupboard so easy for children to access.. broken parasols, sharp broken poles left lying around, abandoned glasses and cups from pub left For days. Def wouldn’t have eaten there if this is their level of cleanliness.. the shower block looked like a great thing (someone must have almost set this place on the right path in the past?) until you realise how unloved the place is. Such a shame. I like hot water but the water from the taps could give you 3rd degree burns!! No warning signs, no emergency contact details displayed… overall I feel it was unsafe, unloved and dismal;( It’s a fairly good location but despite touting the ‘walks’ on pitch-up (which are lovely) no information or leaflets to be seen… Would only use again as a one-night stop over if unavoidable.

Liked: A lovely gem of a site with a small number of good sized pitches, a relaxed quiet vibe, really helpful and friendly owners and delicious home cooked pub food. Wifi could be accessed near the pub building. Phone signal was not available but we were aware of this so not a problem to us

Disliked: Some narrow roads en route to the site though found the approach on the road from Vowchurch to be the best as there were plenty of passing places.

Liked: Beautiful setting really relaxing in a well marked out site. Easy electric hook up especially for us first timers. Clean flushing toilets and large showers with plenty of hot water. Unfortunately the pub was not open so not able to sample the food and drink. Maybe next time!!

Liked: Great place to stay. We were warmly great by H the owner and allocated a really great pitch (4), corner plot, which was just perfect for us. We truly rested and enjoyed our down time. We even enjoyed a lovely meal at the Bridge inn pub which is right on site and was 100 yards from our pitch. We had a gorgeous meal and would highly recommend it. All in all, a lovely time and we’ll certainly be going back.

Liked: Excellent location for peace and quiet - with the added bonus of the pub serving good best and very good food, the showers are probably some of the best provided for an out of the way campsite, (not that we needed as we were in our little campervan - they also have yerts for hire.

Disliked: Access is down a Narrow lane

Liked: Pitch was good, electric and water close by. Pub was nice, friendly. Facilities for washing etc very good.

Disliked: Only WiFi in pub, non on the campsite ( some WiFi extenders could sort that out). Couldn't get any phone signal or tv channels. Ok if you don't want to be contacted.

Liked: Landlord of the Bridge Inn was an amazing host. Nothing was too much trouble, only had to ask! Beautiful, picturesque site, dog friendly, peaceful and relaxing right next to the river. Clean site with all facilities available. All sorts of entertainments included. Just have to book on the right days for the outdoor film showings and live mike and music nights. Our motorhome is 7 meters long and was tight through the endless lanes to get to pub, but we made it! Wouldn't be much fun coming up against the hgvs which travel along the same lanes. Thankfully we must have chosen the right time to arrive and leave as otherwise it would have been a difficult journey.

Disliked: The lanes were very narrow and had limited passing, pull in lanes. Pub closed on Sunday and Monday! OMG, No phone service or WI-FI !

Local attractions

Walks, walks and yet more English and Welsh walks… dozens to pick from start straight from the pub, like the handsome route to Hay-on-Wye nine miles away, to have a wander around the bookshops before tottering back with to base with a rucksack full of reading material. The Black Mountains and the Brecon Beacons National Park, both edging the site, also have enough hikes of all lengths to keep you out of mischief for weeks. Abergavenny, the Monmouthshire town promoted as one of the 'gateway to Wales', is 10 miles from Bridge Inn Camping Site and has many more hiking options as the Marches Way, Beacons Way and Usk Valley Walk all pass through it (if these just aren't enough walking for you, the 177-mile Offa's Dyke Path is nearby). Abergavenny dates back to Roman times and has many old buildings and ruins to see; for more ancientness, county capital Hereford is 15 miles from the pub and has a fine 11th-century cathedral, home to the splendidly eccentric medieval depiction of the world in the Mappa Mundi.
