Watch jet planes gliding over RAF Fairford and trek the Thames Path at Jenners Barn Pop-Up Camping, a gorgeous Cotswolds meadow that's practically begging to be bivouacked on. This back to basics site is part of a working farm and home to a friendly herd of cows, so you're sure to get a good taste of country living during stays here. This site is well-suited to self-sufficient types who thrive in natural surrounds. Green, grassy and rural views abound in this quiet spot, where you're more than welcome to set up a barbecue. Luxury it ain't – you'll want to bring a trusty torch to help you get around after dark, and there are no showers for guests' use (although regularly cleaned loos are available). Creature comforts are still available close by, though – it's about a mile's walk to a farm shop or to a friendly independent café (there's a play area here where the kids can let off steam while parents fuel up with a caffeine fix). Outdoor adventure is within walking distance, too – peaceable spots like Whelford Pool Nature Reserve and the Thames Path are both a short stroll away. Well-behaved dogs are welcome.

Local attractions

Animal-themed adventures beckon at Cotswold Wildlife Park and Gardens (15 minutes' drive); for a slightly more niche safari, check out Crocodiles of the World (25 minutes) – this last one's fairly self-explanatory, but it certainly makes a kooky addition to the rather proper market town of Witney (half an hour). Cirencester (20 minutes), aka the capital of the Cotswolds, is home to Cirencester Park (one of the best examples of geometric landscaping in Britain), a well-known antiques and collectables market and the Corinium Museum, a place that delves deep into the town's Roman roots. On the other side of the Cotswolds, Cheltenham (35 minutes) is a splendid spa town where you can stroll around grand and graceful squares or take a dip at Sandford Parks Lido. Ambling around the dreaming spires of Oxford is far from out of the question – the ancient university town and its world-class Ashmolean Museum are 40 minutes away by road. Counterbalance all that learned stuff with a spot of retail therapy – there are some great shopping options at the city's Westgate centre, while big-brand bargains can be snapped up at nearby Bicester Village (50 minutes).
