  • Smart lodges in private grounds near Gloucestershire’s Cotswold Way
  • A 20-minute drive to WWT Slimbridge, and 25 to Westonbirt Arboretum
  • Kitchenette, separate lounge and dining area; bed linen supplied
Just off the Cotswold Way and with Gloucestershire views that seem to go on for miles, The Hoot has contemporary glamping accommodation set in complete privacy within the grounds of a small working farm. Each smart wooden unit comes complete with a well-equipped kitchenette kitted out with everything you need to make family meals. Stylish and neat interiors include separate lounge and dining areas, and for cooler times there’s a woodburner to keep everyone cosy and warm. All bed linen is supplied so that’s less for you to pack. Outside is a lawn for the exclusive use of guests; it’s fenced off and set well away from any roads so kids can have a run around in total safety. The local village of Leonard Stanley (five minutes’ walk) has all sorts of handy features: a playground with swings and climbing frames for your younger offspring, pubs and takeaways if you don’t feel like cooking, and farm shops for picking up foodie bits if you do. Supermarkets for major shopping expeditions can be found in Stroud (15 minutes’ drive).

Barn Owl 2 bedroom lodge

Liked: Farmer Sid was lovely. He showed us round his small farm and the boys got to sit in his tractor. The lodge was very clean and well equipped with everything you needed to have a stress free holiday. Having the bed lining and towels provided really helped with space in the car. The views were amazing especially from a view point Sid pointed out 10mins up the road. Theres lots to do/visit within an hrs drive so its a good location for exploring. We will be back!

Shepherd's hut

Liked: The host (welcoming and explaining everything), the setup, how organised the place was, and how well the pod was equipped (spare toilet roll, storage space, spare blankets, milke & cereal left available etc). Mobile signal was very good. At the access road entrance there was a small farm vending shop which we used for local dairy produce which was lovely!

Barn Owl 2 bedroom lodge

Liked: We had a lovely stay at the Hoot. Our lodge was immaculate with everything we needed and more, including some lovely extra touches. Situated on a small working farm in a lovely quiet spot, with lots to do locally. Our hosts went out of their way to make our stay special - they even showed us around the farm which we loved! They were happy to leave us to get on with things but also on hand if we needed anything. I would absolutely recommend the Hoot - we’ll definitely be back.

Disliked: Nothing!

There are also ancient remains at Uley Long Barrow (an hour and 20 minutes). More historic sights include bathhouse remains and a mosaic pavement at Great Witcombe Roman Villa (half an hour’s drive), while Woodchester Mansion (15 minutes) is an unfinished Gothic Revival house known for its ornamental stone carvings and colonies of bats. Nature-loving families can meet Highland cows and feed lambs (in season) at Cattle Country Farm Park, or take a boat safari to see Bewick swans feeding in their hundreds at WWT Slimbridge (both 20 minutes). A stroll around Westonbirt Arboretum (25 minutes) turns up all manner of rare and exotic trees, especially when the colours pop in autumn, while a ramble at Painswick Rococo Garden (25 minutes) takes you to 18th-century follies, formal box gardens and a maze.
