Summer is here!

  • Well-maintained and peaceful park set alongside the River Cam
  • A 10-minute drive from the edge of the Cotswolds National Landscape
  • Pub site with beer garden; many country walks nearby
Hurrah, a pub site, and what a nicely named – and nicely placed – one too. Picture this: Riverside Caravan Park at The George is a peaceful, popular and very friendly park set along the wildlife haven of Gloucestershire's River Cam, with its own old-style family inn serving up home-cooked local food and traditional ales and ciders at reasonable prices (it should also certainly be mentioned that The George has its own steakhouse section and regular steak nights). The park – and pub – is an easy five-minute drive from the M5, making it a peachy place to use as a base for exploring Gloucestershire or as a stopover on the way to or from Cornwall and the southwest, and close to countryside walks passing along the river to snap otters, kingfishers, swans and other wildfowl on the smartphone. There's easy access to the A38 to get to other Gloucestershire highlights, like 16 miles of coarse fishing on the Gloucester to Sharpness Canal within 10 minutes' drive and the Forest of Dean 50 minutes away. And it should certainly also be mentioned that The George has a large beer garden, with plenty of benches for riverside relaxing and looking for those otters and swans… The amenities are roomy and well-maintained and include a family-friendly shower block with easy access, a loo and a shower accessible to disabled guests, washing-up facilities in the main shower block, a washing machine and a children's playground.

Liked Lovely double pitch, tons of room, little walk along stream to small wood, close-by pub serving good food, easy drive from Bristol or Gloucester. Very warm welcome from owner. Hands down the most luxurious shower facilities I have encountered in 10 years of camping!

Disliked Some road noise from A38 50m away and M5 a mile away. Very bright lights on campsite, shone into tent and made sleep a little difficult (if you have a black-out tent, you should be fine, though! Children's playground in pub garden may be a little noisy until the pub closes at night.

Liked Warm and spacious shower block. Our family of 4 could fit into one room.

Excellent pub on site and kids play park.

Not too far from our pitch or any pitch really to toilet block.

Plenty of space on the pitch to ensure you are on level ground. Few dips and bumps but we avoided these.

No WiFi at the park (not that I was expecting any) but available in the pub. Three phone service was fine.

Disliked Near to A road. I sleep with ear plugs so not really an issue for me personally but for some this could be an important factor.

We're new to camping but had to buy and extension to get electric to our tent. I couldn't see any advice on needing more than 15m AHU.

Liked First visit to Riverside and really nice friendly welcome on arrival, really good pitch size (we went for the XL) which comes with a picnic bench and water tap on pitch which is always handy. Nice to have the separation of hedges around each pitch for more privacy too. Pub conveniently on site which we had pre-booked a table for (food was very good and bonus of live music that night). Shower block has 4 separate units each with WC and wash basin and a really good size, which were immaculate! Nice to be able to walk the dogs along the river straight from the campsite, very picturesque.

Disliked Only minor dislike onsite would be down to the specific pitch we had next to the Elsan disposal (behind the hedge), which meant every time it was used we would get an unpleasant waft around our pitch - so we'llaim for a different pitch next time.

The day we booked the pub meal was a Saturday early evening and it was packed in there due to the local football team/s arriving post-match for drinks, but to be fair they all relocated outside as the weather was good and the staff were brilliant at finding us a quieter table away from the foot traffic, for us and the 2 dogs.

Liked Beautiful, clean, spacious bathrooms on site. An idyllic setting with great dog walks from the site. The family play area seemed very popular while we were there & the pub on site offered a good selection of food & drinks.
There's no wifi on site but you can login in the beer garden & the pubs wifi.

Disliked Literally the only fault I could find was that it would have been nice to have a shower caddy.

Local attractions

Use this place as a base to get to the best of Gloucestershire and its surrounds, whether you want countryside or city days in the likes of Bristol, Cheltenham and Bath. (It's a safe bet you'd like a day at Cheltenham Racecourse, 40 minutes' drive away, too.) WWT Slimbridge (10 minutes) gives juicy chances to see resident ducks, swans and thousands of migratory birds alongside stacks of events like otter feeds, guided walks and canoe safaris. If it's more greenery you're after, several excellent options are an easy drive away: the 22-acre village green at Frampton on Severn (five minutes), said to be the longest in England, within a five-mile drive; scenic strolls along the river Severn, within four miles; the National Trust's Westbury Court Gardens, (40 minutes), and Stroud's hidden valley Painswick Rococo Garden (half an hour); be sure to see the snowdrops if you're there in season. Also recommended by the team are Gloucester Docks and the National Waterways Museum (25 minutes); Woodchester Mansion Trust (20 minutes), an odd and unfinished country house surrounded by National Trust parkland, and 11th-century Berkeley Castle (10 minutes), thought to be the place where poor old Edward II saw his last day.
