General

  • Well-maintained and peaceful park set alongside the River Cam
  • Many country walks nearby
  • Pub and beer garden

Hurrah, another Pitchup.com pub campsite! And what a nicely named – and nicely placed – one too.

Picture this, pub campsite peeps: Riverside Caravan Park at The George, a peaceful, popular and very friendly park set along the wildlife haven of Gloucestershire's River Cam, with its own old-style family inn serving up home-cooked local nosh and traditional ales and ciders at decent prices (it should also certainly be mentioned that The George has its own steakhouse section and regular steak nights).

The park – and pub – is an easy ten minutes from the M5, making it a peachy place to use as a base for exploring Gloucestershire or as a stopover on the way to or from Cornwall and the southwest, and close to countryside walks passing along the river to snap otters, kingfishers, swans and other wildfowl on the smartphone.

There's easy access to the A38 to get to other Gloucestershire highlights, like 16 miles of coarse fishing on the Gloucester to Sharpness Canal within three miles and the Forest of Dean eight miles away. And it should certainly also be mentioned that The George has a large beer garden, with plenty of benches for riverside relaxing and looking for those otters and swans...

The amenities are roomy and well-maintained and include a family-friendly shower block with easy access, a loo and shower accessible to disabled guests, washing-up facilities in the main shower block, a washing machine and a children's playground.

Please note

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

Facilities/activities including the launderette are subject to extra charges payable on arrival.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act.

There is open, unfenced water on site.

Please bear in mind when booking that there is a height restriction barrier in place of 1.9 metres: this is for security purposes. Cars are issued with key cards to allow access on and off the site.

Motorhomes staying for more than one night will have access on and off the site between the hours of 9am and 12pm and 4pm and 6pm. If you require access on or off site outside these times, please note that your booking will be cancelled and deposit lost.

Level grass pitches, tidy site with excellent clean facilities 15/10/2017

Pitches were spacious and staff were friendly, although didn't seem to be expecting us so not sure they received the communication from Pitchup!
The park was quiet and bathrooms were really nice, spacious and spotless. Right next to a river walk which is quite busy with dog walkers so you really do need to keep your dog on a lead at this site unlike others which have a rule to keep your dog on a lead but a well behaved one is fine off lead!
The pub accepts dogs and children and the food is tasty and reasonable priced - especially the early bird before 6pm (30%off) weekdays.
This site is a organised camping/touring site so the pitches are lined up and all seemed electric - it's well suited to big motor homes and caravans but many are grass and will fit large tents.

    Disliked:

There's nothing to "dislike" as such, my preference is a more casual site with campfires and privacy but booked this site expecting a "touring site" as I needed a one night stopover. I would book again but those liking "back to basics camping" won't fall in love with it!

    Disliked:

Site starting to look run down as warden recently left . Number of permanently sited workers units which has damaged a number of pitches. Units sited less than the required 6m apart.

Looks nothing like the photos which is a pity as it has so much potential.

The pub on site was excellent and the washroom facilities first class.

    Disliked:

The view from our pitch was of caravans in storage, many of which were in very poor state of repair, one in particular being held together with black tape and having huge gas bottles secured by rope. I tried to upload a picture but it was refused because it wasn't high enough quality/definition - shame because a picture tells a thousand words.
Our three caravans were put on one large pitch area that was clearly too small for 3 caravans. We were far too close together and no doubt if an inspector had called, he would have deemed us too close together to comply with fire safety rules.
Waste bins on site were overflowing.
The site was only 20% full but we were not allowed to use other pitches which looked very much nicer.
Much of the above was probably due to a change of warden. Apparently the previous one had just left and no information was passed on. A poor reflection on site management.
It was expensive for the pitches we had and the views we were given.
Such a shame because the site has a lot to offer, but needs TLC and somebody in charge.

Good site excellently located for breaking the long journey for ... 19/09/2017

Good site excellently located for breaking the long journey for us to Devon/Cornwall - we only stayed one night on the way down but four on the way back. The site was managed by the pub staff while we were there so wasn't the seamless experience that you would get on a stand alone site but they were as friendly and helpful as they could be considering they had pub duties as well. Despite being on the A38 the site was quiet, every 2 pitches separated by hedges and we had a small river running behind ours and there was also a wooded area to explore. The big upside for us was that it was a very simple journey back to the M5 (5/10 mins). The unisex facilities were secure, clean and offered private bathrooms.

    Disliked:

Our only difficulty was getting off the pitch on our first stop as there had been some rain but it was less of an issue on our return stay.

Great place to stay as a stop off on the M5 south or north. 5 mins from the motorway. The George pub staff were very friendly and happy to help on our late arrival (8.00pm). Nice new clean family sized bath rooms, play area and pub for something to eat. Only stopped one night so didn't see much of the surrounding area. We would return for a weekend stay in the future.

    Disliked:

The site could do with a sign to say to ask in the pub to check in and to open the barrier.

Local attractions

Use Riverside Caravan Park at The George as a base to get to the best of Gloucestershire and its surrounds, whether you want to stick close to the countryside or have city days in the likes of Bristol, Cheltenham and Bath. (We bet you'd like a day at Cheltenham Racecourse 20 miles away too.)

Within strolling distance, walk the dogs and/or the kids at the little Rosie's Wood, taking the footpath along the river from the park and over the bridge. Two miles away, the Wildfowl and Wetland Trust's Slimbridge reserve gives juicy chances to see resident ducks, swans and thousands of migratory birds alongside stacks of events like otter feeds, guided walks and canoe safaris.

If it's more nature, greenery and gardens you're after, several excellent options as well as the Forest of Dean are an easy drive away: the 22-acre village green at Frampton on Severn, said to be the longest in England, within a five-mile drive; scenic strolls along the River Severn, within four miles; the National Trust's Westbury Court Gardens, seven miles away, and Stroud's hidden valley Painswick Rococo garden eight miles away (be sure and see the snowdrops if you're there in season).

Great golf in scenic surroundings can be had at Stinchcombe Hill Golf Club, on the southern edge of the Cotswold Escarpment above the Severn Valley and three miles from The George, but if your small cowboys and cowgirls don't fancy that, hustle them to the play areas and farm animals at Cattle Country Adventure Park four and a half miles away.

Also recommended by the Riverside Caravan Park at The George team are Gloucester Docks and the National Waterways Museum ten miles away; Woodchester Mansion, an odd and unfinished country house surrounded by National Trust parkland (four and half miles), and eleventh century Berkeley Castle (five miles), traditionally thought to be the place where poor old Edward Two saw his last day.
