  • Quiet and dog-friendly countryside break surrounded by footpaths
  • A 25-minute drive from Nottingham and 45 minutes to the Peak District
  • Walk to four pubs in half an hour; drinks and ice cream sold on site
Did someone say a quiet countryside break in darling Derbyshire? Introducing Little Hay Grange Wild Camping, a quiet rural getaway thatā€™s surrounded by country pubs, a web of countryside trails and characterful villages. Being just five miles from the M1, the site is easily accessible, yet far away from the noise of traffic. Your relaxing bubble is in fact surrounded by Derbyshire villages that are sprawling with country pubs - there are four such establishments under half an hourā€™s walk from base in Ockbrook, all serving some mighty-fine grub, and more a short drive away. If youā€™re craving a sweet treat or in need of a little caffeine boost, the site runs a cabin that supplies ice cream and hot and cold drinks - just leave your pennies in the honesty box, ta. All thatā€™s left is to find a splendid little patch on site to set about tucking into your findings. Then, set your sights on the network of footpaths that criss-cross the local countryside, accessible directly from the site, or footpaths to local villages. The Peak District National Park is 45 minutesā€™ drive away if you want to make a day out of hiking over valleys, moorlands and hills. Thatā€™s all your walkies sorted for dog owners - Little Hay Grange Wild Camping welcomes dogs on leads, you see. What about takeaways and supermarkets, then? Well, Spondon (10 minutesā€™ drive) has a big supermarket for any picky eaters and thereā€™s a smaller shop in Borrowash (five minutes) along with takeaways and other shops. Ockbrook also has a local cafĆ© where guests can nab themselves cake and tea.

Liked: Location Lovely friendly owner Beautiful quiet site Well stocked fridge / freezer and use of urn! Really nice on site toilet Access to fresh water and wash area Local to the A52 Derbyshire Visited as a couple with 3 senior pugs + trailer. Lovely quiet site, warm welcoming host, lovely surroundings and bonus of amazingly stocked on site honesty shop and brilliant toilet facility. We loved it here and will be returning without a doubt.

Disliked: Difficult to find at first - on the same site as the cattery. Very sloped site, rutted in places and very long grass. Not an issue for us though!

Liked: We were so pleasantly surprised by this little gem of a place. Last minute booking and it couldnā€™t have been better. We wanted somewhere quiet, not too busy and beautiful. The little toilet was spotless and thereā€™s a water tap on the field. We walked to the local pub for dinner and hired a fire pit. Definitely recommend for wild camping. The owner was really helpful and speedy when we needed anything but also just left you to it. Perfect, thank you!

Liked: Wonderfully peaceful campsite, it was great to have the option to pitch up where we liked. It was great to have a proper toilet and sink. The little hut 'shop' was lovely and convenient too. Nice countryside feel to the whole place. Owners were friendly and greeted us straight away when we arrived and contacted them. Would absolutely visit again!

Unpowered grass and earth tent or trailer tent site

Liked: Although it has a toilet and sink facility we loved this campsite for it's "wild camping" feel with nothing but open fields around and beautiful views and walks. You can hire their fire pits and purchase the wood which is great so you don't have to take your own adding to your luggage. Check out time is 4pm which we loved as we had a stroll to Bartlewood Lodge for breakfast walking through the fields behind. For Ā£18 per night this is an absolute steal. Will definitely be returning and recommending.
