Smith Hall Meadows: Wild meadow surrounds

General

  • Small-scale site overlooking a peaceful wildflower meadow
  • A 10-minute drive from Ashbourne; 30 minutes from Bakewell
  • Furnished bell tents with a woodburning stove and private bathroom

Outdoor breaks should be a breath of fresh air, a means of escape from all things dull and dreary… That ideal is more than met by the smart and spacious accommodation on offer at Derbyshire's Smith Hall Meadows, where two furnished tents have been set up to allow you to wake up to comely country views.

The superb skies above Smith Hall Meadows inspired the names given to the accommodation here – both Kite and Buzzard are modern and well-equipped units well-suited for couples and family groups. Each comes with a woodburning stove with the first batch of logs provided; a private toilet and shower pod is on hand next door (please note that towels aren't provided so you'll need to bring your own). Cooking can be done outdoors here as each tent has a barbecue area (although there's a covered dining shelter in place just in case that those superb skies decide to open).

There's also much to admire down on the ground at Smith Hall Meadows. Manicured lawns certainly have their place – like nearby Chatsworth House (35 minutes’ drive), where they work a treat – but that's not the setup here. Instead, expect long and luscious grass dotted with wildflowers – far more in tune with these natural surrounds.

Smith Hall Meadows is a countrified kind of spot where you can pitch up is splendid seclusion, but civilisation, should you need it, is just around the corner: Hulland Ward, with its handy village stores and local pub, is half a mile away.

Please note

Lovely glamping tent. Comfortable beds. Nice private shower& toilet provided for each tent.

    Disliked:

Location - lovely field /meadow but has a busy road at the side.. constant traffic can be heard plus think its in the flight path for east mids Airport, planes overhead are loud!
Was very very cold during our stay & was only provided with 6 small pieces of wood ( not logs) for both the log burner inside the tent & the fireplace & bbq outside. The rest you had to buy at £5 and at £90 per night we thought was excessive! Plus make sure you wash all cutlery before use as ours was dirty.. ( supposed to have been deep cleaned)?

From the manager...

Thank you for you comments. We do appreciate your review and we are sorry you found the road busy. I am not aware we are under a flight path, and believe that East Midlands Airport is currently closed.

In the write up of our site it refers to a batch of logs, and this is sufficient for the first fire in the wood burning stove. I am not sure it is unusual for additional logs to be extra. I apologise if this was not clear.

I would not wish for anything to be found dirty and I will certainly make sure that everything is checked carefully.

We hired 2 tents with friends and had the whole place to ourselves. Our young children (ages 2 to 6) could run around the field as much as they wanted without us worrying about them impacting on other peoples holidays.
Facilities were great, bathrooms were pretty much en-suite which was a luxury! Kettles were right next to the tent so we didn’t have to walk across the campsite for our early morning cup of tea or to wash pots.

There are lots of family friendly walks and cycles nearby to enjoy.

Outside of covid restrictions it is possible for friends to pitch up a tent too which would be a lot of fun!

Myself, husband and two kids (3&4) stayed overnight in the Kite tent. The place was immaculate. Cleaner than some 5* hotels I've stayed in. It had everything you could need; cutlery, BBQ, fridge, water and the shower had great pressure and was nice and hot. The kids loved having their own beds and had great fun running around the field. Tania contacted us before our travel about a problem with the shower door which shows her conscientious nature, and was very prompt answering any questions. Overall the tent was really lovely, had homely touches, great views and provided a great adventure base for the kids. A bonus was also having the car very close but behind a mini-hill so didn't spoil the view.

    Disliked:

The traffic on the road nearby was, at times, a little distracting when I was daydreaming and watching the birds flying, the hawk looking for mice and bee's buzzing. But this is no fault of the site owners. At night, it wasn't an issue at all. We took extra sleeping bags as the forecast said it would drop to 5 degrees C. Unfortunately, our little ones found it too cold, as did I, and we would plan to come back later in the year.

From the manager...

Thank you for your comments. We can’t do much about the temperature but we are in the process of re-wilding the verges now so I hope that will make it more peaceful

Rather chilly, could do with an electric blanket or something alike for the colder evenings. Recommend taking a Hot Water Bottle! But that’s just me being a wimp, the stay was lovely!

From the manager...

Yes it was cold that weekend. Unfortunately electric blankets are not an option. But your own hot water bottle sounds like a plan! Glad you enjoyed the weekend

We loved staying at this campsite. The bell tents were huge and very well kitted out. The kitchen and bathroom facilities were excellent. We really didn’t need to bring anything with us at all which made it a very easy holiday. The children loved roaming in the paths (they called it a maze) around the flowers and made up lots of games about dragons and unicorns. We didn’t not leave the site at all during our stay as the children were really happy just playing in the field and meadow. It was a very relaxing holiday.

Thank you for your kind comments. We are glad you had a lovely stay and the picture of the children playing is fabulous. We will look into creating a ground maze with the lanes next year!

Just a minor niggle really, but campsite is located by a lane leading to a lorry park...not the quietest, particularly in the evening and early morning.

We are glad you had a lovely stay. We take your comments on board about the lane on weekdays, we are also keen to improve guest's experience.

Local attractions

This is a nifty base for those looking to pick up one of the nearby Peak District's traffic-free trails. Head to Ashbourne (10 minutes' drive) to embark on the Tissington Trail or to Bakewell (30 minutes) for the equally rewarding Monsal Trail. If opting for the latter, you'll want to make sure you have bike lights or a torch – it makes venturing through the old railway tunnels much easier.

If you’re more drawn to watersports, hotfoot it down to Carsington Water (10 minutes), where qualified instructors are on hand to guide you through the ins and outs of sailing, windsurfing, paddleboarding or kayaking. Fishing fans aren't left out either: this stonkingly well-stocked lake is inhabited by boatloads of brown and rainbow trout.

After a spot of upstairs-downstairs intrigue? The halls and corridors of Chatsworth House (35 minutes) are lined with Old Masters, porcelain and many other fine things. If accompanied by kids who'd rather be running around outside, take them down to the estate's working farmyard, where they can muck in with the milking and handle a host of cuddly critters.

Must see

  • Kedleston Hall (7.0 kilometres)
  • Arkwright's Cromford Mills (10.9 kilometres)
