  • Small-scale site overlooking a peaceful wildflower meadow
  • A 10-minute drive from Ashbourne; 30 minutes from Bakewell
  • Furnished glamping with a woodburning stove and private bathroom
Outdoor breaks should be a breath of fresh air, a means of escape from all things dull and dreary… That ideal is more than met by the smart and spacious accommodation on offer at Derbyshire's Smith Hall Meadows, where furnished glamping accommodations have been set up to allow you to wake up to comely country views. The superb skies above Smith Hall Meadows inspired the names given to the accommodation here, like Kite and Buzzard. The modern and well-equipped units are well-suited for couples and family groups. Each comes with a woodburning stove with the first batch of logs provided; a private toilet and shower pod is on hand next door (please note that towels aren't provided so you'll need to bring your own). Cooking can be done outdoors here as each pitch has a barbecue area (although there's a covered dining shelter in place just in case that those superb skies decide to open). There's also much to admire down on the ground at Smith Hall Meadows. Manicured lawns certainly have their place – like nearby Chatsworth House (35 minutes’ drive), where they work a treat – but that's not the setup here. Instead, expect long and luscious grass dotted with wildflowers – far more in tune with these natural surrounds. Smith Hall Meadows is a countrified kind of spot where you can pitch up is splendid seclusion, but civilisation, should you need it, is just around the corner: Hulland Ward, with its handy village stores and local pub, is half a mile away.

Kestrel yurt

Liked: We stayed for 2 days in the Kestral Yurt and I can’t fault it. Had everything you would need (cooking equipment, cutlery, plates, bedding, extra blankets). We were there during the recent storm and the yurt was amazing, especially with the log burner! The owners came on both days to make sure everything was ok, which was lovely. Added bonus to have your own shower/toilet cubicle.

Buzzard bell tent

Liked: We really enjoyed our stay at smith hall meadow. The yurt, bathroom and cooking tent were excellent and really clean and well presented. Everything we needed was provided - making travelling much easier. The location itself was great and very central to all the areas we wanted to visit. The owners were also really helpful when I emailed them with a query, replying quickly and even emailed us to give us a heads up about the meadow itself being a little muddy. There was also a really very informative little arrival pack - outlining all local and nearby attractions and amenities. There was a lovely pub serving food a very short walk (The Black Horse) and another pub a short drive where the food was exceptionally good and good value for money (The Tiger Inn) . We did do a little cooking in the tent that was provided - which is next to the yurt and everything was provided that we needed, such as utensils and pans and kettle. We didn’t sit in the tent as the weather was good .. but there is a picnic table in there should you need to. Both my teen children enjoyed the fact there was Wi-Fi and they could charge their phones! I enjoyed the double bed which was very comfortable and the lovely warm bedding!

Disliked: Was a little unsure on what to do on arrival - perhaps instructions could be emailed prior to arriving? However the owner answered the phone straight away and helped direct me what to do. We noted that there was two yurts and only one cooking tent, fire pit & BBQ between them .. there was no one in there whilst we stopped so it wasn’t a problem but not sure how that would work if both yurts were occupied?

From the manager: Thanks for the lovely review. Just to et you know, we only allow both tents that are pitched together to be booked by one party, so you are never sharing a toilet or washroom and dinning shelter with someone you don't know. we do that so larger groups of family and friends can come away together. I do take on board you comments about arrival information and will be more consistent with it. thanks

The very best stay we had in a yurt so far

Buzzard bell tent

Liked: A fantastic place to stay in. We had an opportunity to stay in a kestrel yurt. It had a separate tent with a full kitchen equipment, including plates, cups, bottle openers cutlery, knives even a cutting board. There is also a separate exclusive unit to wash dishes and a bathroom with a shower, installed in a glamping like, wooden enclosure. There was also a bbq and a fire pit to use as well. We welcomed a generous amount of wood for the stove and a spotless cleanliness. The site is inhabited by various animals, and even a small pond! From the map it would seem that is close to the road, but in fact it was very quiet. Also what I think is a big plus, there were just a couple other pitches occupied. We felt like in a hotel, but on a field - definitely a superb place to stay.

Disliked: It would be crazy to complain about anything. On entrance could be better displayed, as we drove past without noticing.

Kestrel yurt

Liked: A beautiful setting, lovely field and meadow. The tents were beautifully furnished and comfortable. Toilets and showers were clean and excellent. There were plenty of chairs for us all and cooking facilities. The showers were warm immediately as were the taps. The stoves were easy to use and did a great job of keeping the cold away during the night.

Disliked: The barbeques were a bit small. Could do with one or two brick barbeques. However, they were in working order and we were able to cook for 9 people using them, just not good for my back but I am getting old!

Buzzard bell tent

Liked: This site is a little gem, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay, it was very peaceful as there are only 2 Bell tents on the site When we got there it was self check in, but all the information required was inside the tent, with a contact number if required. There was also plenty of information about the local area and places to visit. We had booked the Buzzard, but we asked for just 3 of the beds to be made up, so realised when we went into the tents we were actually set up in the Kite tent. This didn't matter as the other tent our friend was staying in anyway. The bell tent was lovely, beds were comfy, and the log burner kept us so warm at night. There was a well equipped camping kitchen, and was also a BBQ and a fire pit. Extra logs were available to buy. They also provide 2 locks for tent if you want to use them when you go out, and there's a key for the bathroom too, should you wish to lock that up. There is free WiFi - this is a great addition when you have a 10 year old! We will definitely return!

Disliked: A small camping table to use outside by the bbq/firepit would be a good addition, next time we'll take one with us, and also extra camping chairs would be useful as only 2 were provided. (we had taken our own so not an issue for us) These are definitely not dislikes by the way, just something to bear in mind.

Local attractions

This is a nifty base for those looking to pick up one of the nearby Peak District's traffic-free trails. Head to Ashbourne (10 minutes' drive) to embark on the Tissington Trail or to Bakewell (30 minutes) for the equally rewarding Monsal Trail. If opting for the latter, you'll want to make sure you have bike lights or a torch – it makes venturing through the old railway tunnels much easier. If you’re more drawn to watersports, hotfoot it down to Carsington Water (10 minutes), where qualified instructors are on hand to guide you through the ins and outs of sailing, windsurfing, paddleboarding or kayaking. Fishing fans aren't left out either: this stonkingly well-stocked lake is inhabited by boatloads of brown and rainbow trout. After a spot of upstairs-downstairs intrigue? The halls and corridors of Chatsworth House (35 minutes) are lined with Old Masters, porcelain and many other fine things. If accompanied by kids who'd rather be running around outside, take them down to the estate's working farmyard, where they can muck in with the milking and handle a host of cuddly critters.
