Henley Park Wild Camping

9.2

This campground/park does not currently take bookings here on Pitchup.com.

General

  • Wild camping on private pitches in Derbyshire woodland near Matlock
  • A 15-minute drive to Gulliver’s Kingdom; Chatsworth House 20 minutes
  • Firepit and running water on site; café, hiking and cycling nearby

The people at Henley Park Wild Camping were serious when they named their site, for this really is rather like wild camping in secluded woodland. At this peaceful pop-up spot on the outskirts of Matlock in Derbyshire, you can pitch up wherever you like: in a quiet corner on your own or next to other campers around a firepit if you're feeling sociable. Whatever you decide, you’ll wake up to fine views and the sound of birds chirping in the morning.

It's not completely wild here however – there are strings of solar fairy lights hung around the camp to help create a magical vibe, and a bunch of facilities to make life easy. These include running water (running off a silent generator, which is only on until 10pm), a washing-up area, loos and charging points for phones.

On a Sunday, you can walk to Tansley Sunday Market and Car Boot Sale (20 minutes) to have a nose around stalls selling anything from local Bakewell tarts to ready-made curries. A popular café two minutes' walk away is known for its tasty Sunday lunch and sausage baps to get you going in the morning.

As well as walking and cycling, there’s fishing for rainbow trout at Ogston Reservoir (five minutes’ drive), plus plenty of culture: investigate Derbyshire’s industrial past at Cromford Mills (15 minutes) or check out stately piles like Chatsworth House and Haddon Hall (both 20 minutes). Kids won’t be bored either, with all the thrill rides at Gulliver’s Kingdom (15 minutes) making for a fun-filled day out.

Wow what a place! We booked last minute for a little get away. I'd trawled pitchup for a site not too far away and that had pitches left and HP Wild camping just kept jumping out at me. We totally didn't regret it, from check in to the facilities (which a far far better than any wild camping sites)...... toilets, showers and a bar!! What more could you need.
The site was friendly, clean and just what we needed. Gutted we didn't get a secluded pitch but that didn't affect our great weekend.
We spent time in the bar, watching football and wandered around the huge car boot on the field next door.
Absolutely perfect, I just wish you were open next weekend because we probably would have been back!
    See you next year 😀

It was so nice to read all of your fantastic comments you have put about your stay at HP Wild Camping.
Please do come and see us next year and hopefully get a pitch in the woods ( we are trying to create more pitches in secluded areas)

Cannot fault this place at all. It is everything you could wish for and more. Facilities were great and lovely and clean and the owner and staff were absolutely fantastic and could not have been more welcoming (thanks for the lift to the bar!!). The rustic bar was fabulous and had everything you could possibly need and the atmosphere was buzzing. We joined the quiz and then stayed for the karaoke which was great. Cannot wait to come back and will be recommending to our friends. We honestly would not stay anywhere else now we’ve been here. Roll on next summer!!!

Thank you for your feedback, it is so nice to hear that you have had a fantastic weekend with us and cannot wait until next summer. But watch this space, if we are granted a license from freedom camping and the local council we may be able to open longer. Glad you enjoyed the buzzing atmosphere but alas we have had some people complain about this so we cannot please everyone, but the main thing is that you have had a great time with us. We look forward to seeing you again in the future.

location near peak district was good; staff were very nice. we liked the wooded areas and the fire pits. our tent was enormous, though some of the zippers didn't close

    Disliked:

karaoke was loud and went until about 11:30pm both nights, which made it difficult to get sleep. the loos were dirty and frequently out of loo roll. allowing people to pitch up anywhere meant walking through other people's campsites to get to yours. this site might be good for some people and I don't want to dissuade anyone from booking, but I just want to be realistic about the noise if you are pitched up anywhere near the bar area (the grassy fields out front are likely less noisy, but the pre-pitched "rent a tent" was quite close to the bar)

From the manager...

Sorry you had more dislikes than liked but as this was the Bank Holiday Weekend and the biggest two days of our opening it is so hard to please everyone. The loos were cleaned every day and we kept replenishing the loo rolls ,you only have to thank some of your fellow campers for not leaving them as they found them. We don’t have to provide any toilets or showers as a wild camp site. As previously stated to go wild camping and not bring some loo roll is like going camping with out a tent. The best bit of wild camping is being able to pitch up anywhere.

Bar was a luxury, novelty touch. The seating area was comfy, drinks good & really made the experience. Dogs loved it too!

The area was massive with lots of cool alcoves, and areas to pitch up, we arrived Saturday afternoon so most of the 'cool' pitches were taken, but pitched up on the big field and it was fine, large enough to have plenty of space.

Car boot right next door, a cafe a few minutes walk away and a lovely pup about a 40 minute walk away through public footpaths.

    Disliked:

The toilet and shower facilities. It wasn't a deal breaker and didn't ruin our stay, but there was only one shower so we had to time it well (shower was warm with good pressure). There were plenty of toilets, 3 wooden building ones and 6 in a temporary unit, however they weren't the cleanest and often had no toilet paper or hand towels.

Again this didn't ruin the stay but worth considering, they were also a good walk from the large field we camped on.

From the manager...

Thank you for your nice comments about your stay with us .About your dislikes with the toilets ,we have 2 unisex ones, three female and one male toilet, plus two showers with hot water, not bad for a wild camping site. As previously stated toilets were cleaned every day plus loo rolls topped up, only got to ask at the bar for loo rolls. This is one thing we have problems with when the toilets are cleaned, it only takes one person to leave them dirty. Hope this will not deter you from camping with us again.

Local attractions

At Matlock Farm Park (five minutes’ drive), the kids might not know what to do first: the pony rides, the enormous jumping pillow or the go-karts? There’s also a petting zoo where they can feed farmyard animals and meet more exotic creatures like alpacas, wallabies and meerkats.

You can ride a vintage double-decker tram at Crich Tramway Village (10 minutes), with its recreated period setting. The route takes you past a leafy park with a bandstand and on to a picnic area with views of the Amber Valley. There’s also a collection of trams, starting from a horse-drawn model from the 1870s.

Take a cable car to the Heights of Abraham (15 minutes), a hilltop estate with far-reaching views of the Derbyshire Dales. After your flight, you can go on a guided tour of two caverns, let the kids blow off some steam at the adventure playground or simply stroll along the shaded paths.

  • Arkwright's Cromford Mills (5.3 kilometres)
