General

  • Secluded site in Derbyshire, 25 minutes’ drive from the Peak District
  • Etherow Country Park 15 minutes’ drive; Manchester 40 minutes
  • Barbecues and firepits, resident pygmy goats and an apiary

On the edge of Peak District National Park (25 minutes’ drive), peaceful, secluded Elizabeth Cottage Camping sits between the river Etherow and the village of Charlesworth (five minutes), in the Derbyshire hills. The site occupies a large field that backs on to ancient woodland dotted with colourful wildflowers.

This is a site where you can reconnect with nature and get up close and personal with varied wildlife. The pond is abuzz with dragonflies and damselflies, plus toads, frogs and newts. Mallards, herons and kingfishers can also be seen by the water, while if you look up to the skies you might spot birds of prey like buzzards, sparrowhawks and tawny owls.

If you have a licence, there’s angling at Etherow Country Park (15 minutes) and fly fishing at Arnfield Reservoir (15 minutes), while riding lessons at Hargate Hill Equestrian Centre (five minutes) or splashing around the Hyde Leisure Pool (20 minutes) ought to keep the kids entertained.

Guests can pet the resident pygmy goats and horses, and pay a visit to the owners’ apiary, which houses thousands of native honeybees. Barbecues are allowed, and the owners will throw in a bag of wood to light the firepit on chilly nights.

There’s a washing-up area and a composting toilet on site, plus recycling facilities. When it’s time to stock up on provisions, a 20-minute walk takes you into Charlesworth, which also has a couple of traditional pubs. Local produce is also available at Lymefield Garden Centre (five minutes’ drive).

Good location, quiet location, owner was super friendly and lovely. Great for a one night stay

Pitches were quite close together. Only one toilet which would be fine if campsite wasn’t busy but we went over the weekend and the campsite was full. Toilet was cleaned regularly though which was great

From the manager...

Many thanks for your feedback Martha, 2022 was our first year of Elizabeth Cottage Camping so we knew we would have to make changes and improvements as we go along. We do have some pitches that are smaller than others and will be making adjustments to ensure that every camper has space and privacy next season. We did measure our pitches to ensure that they are standard size or bigger, however, we have realized that campers prefer more space, which is fine, we've got plenty of grass ;-) We would love for you to come back and see us in 2023, we have some exciting new eco toilet and shower facilities planned for everyone xx

We stayed here with family and friends on the August Bank Holiday and it was an absolute delight.
Basic facilities but perfectly presented and with lots of thoughtful little details which enhanced our stay.
The owners love what they do and you can tell that they genuinely care about their guests having an enjoyable stay. We are seasoned campers and this site was by far the most friendly we have ever stayed at.
We all had such a peaceful, relaxed and tranquil break and will definitely be back again next year.

What a fantastic place! The field was lovely and spacious - plenty of room and not overcrowded even though it was sold out. Marked pitches which helped and we had a pitch next to the family group we were travelling with, as requested at booking.
The owners are just lovely - took time to chat with each group and make everyone feel so welcome. You can tell it's a passion for them to provide a great campsite and they go over-and-above and have certainly delivered a lovely place that we hope to come back to again and again.
The surroundings are lovely - very peaceful and secluded place, with a lovely pond and woodland walks and the river very near. Not far from the end of the lane to a little shop and a couple of pubs too in the village.
The composting toilet works well and they plan to put another one in for next year. Really looking forward to booking again for next year when we can - and keeping fingers crossed it will keep the lovely atmosphere and not get too crowded.
