  • Grass pitches on a farm overlooking Arnfield Reservoir, Derbyshire
  • On the Trans Pennine Trail and 10 minutes’ drive from the Pennine Way
  • Walking and cycling accessible from the site; café-bar on site
Keen to get some hiking in? Crossgate Farm Campsite may be just the spot for you. Set on a working farm with views over Arnfield Reservoir and Longdendale on the outskirts of Tintwistle, Derbyshire, this is a smashing place for walkers and bikers, as guests have direct access to the Trans Pennine Trail, the Pennine Bridleway and Pennine Cycleway Route 68 from the site. Pick-up from public transport can also be arranged so you don’t need to worry about bringing a car. You can pitch up pretty much anywhere you want in the slightly sloping camping field, and while dogs are welcome on your Derbyshire farm stay, please keep them on a lead around the cattle. You’ll also probably be joined at some stage by the free-range chicks, guinea fowls and peacocks. Amenities-wise, the site has toilets and showers with separate male and female facilities. There is a café-bar on site, but if you prefer to do your own meal prep, barbecues are permitted on the camping field (bring your own gear). The village of Hollingworth (five minutes’ drive) has a small convenience store as well as pubs and takeaways.

Unpowered gravel campervan, tent or trailer tent site

Liked Loved the cafe/bar in the barn, great atmosphere and food was lovely. Great views.

Disliked We stayed 2 nights in 2 different spots on the field. The field was a bit too sloped for us.

Unpowered gravel campervan, tent or trailer tent site

Liked Spacious large field, great facilities, the café bar was brilliant even had a disco night while we was there. The goats, chickens, horses and peacocks are a great addition for the kids to keep busy with. A lovely welcome from the owners, very kind. A great first camping trip for my children, they loved every minute and didnt want to leave, we even survived Storm Dave with a few bottles of buds 😂 we will be back in the summer for sure 👍🏼

Unpowered gravel campervan, tent or trailer tent site

Liked Very nice location. Nice cafe and loads of animals to look at. My daughter loved feeding the goats - 50p for a bag of food.

Shower is nice and hot - 20p for 2 mins or £1 for 10.

Site was very wet but it’s rained all winter. Also sloped but it comes with being on a hill.

As other reviews have said the planes and road are noisy but I just brought ear plugs with me.

Unpowered gravel campervan, tent or trailer tent site

Liked Friendly welcome and freedom to choose my pitch. Site is on a bit of a slope but I got a decent flat spot and could park next to my tent.

Good, sheltered pot wash area with plenty of hot water and wash up liquid. Not many showers for such a big site, but clean and with plenty of hot water (coin op - choice of £1 or 20 p coins).

End-of Season shindig in the Barn Bar added a party atmosphere for the Friday night but didn't disturb when I turned in.

Good location to use as a base if you are looking for the Lancaster and P38 Lightning wrecks on Tintwistle Knarr (pics)

Disliked A fair amount of aircraft noise courtesy of Manchester, but you'll get that almost anywhere in the Dark Peak. A628 traffic noise (bring earplugs and you'll be fine).

Due to the washout Saturday, exiting the site next day through a sea of mud at the exit gate was a bit hairy, my car was slipping sideways more than once. Glad I wasn't in a campervan.

Unpowered gravel campervan, tent or trailer tent site

Liked Loved the animals, loads of space to pitch tent and friendly staff. Also very clean facilities.

Disliked There was a nice barn with a bar that also served food, but unfortunately there was a private event on that weekend so we couldn’t use it. This was one of the reasons we picked this campsite so we could use that facility at night, so it should state on the website when there is going to be private events and the barn area is out of use so you are not disappointed when you get there.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: BOOKINGS ARE MADE WELL IN ADVANCE FOR CAMPING, BUT SOMETIMES EVENTS ARE BOOKED CLOSE TO THE EVENT, ITS NOT ALWAYS POSSIBLE TO MAKE PEOPLE AWARE OF EVENTS THAT ARE BEING HELD IN THE BARN.
THE COW SHED IS A GREAT FACILITY IF IT IS NOT ALREADY BEING HIRED OUT FOR PRIVATE EVENTS AND IN MANY OCCASIONS PEOPLE ARE HAPPY TO SHARE, BUT WEDDINGS ARE A BIT DIFFERENT.

Unpowered gravel campervan, tent or trailer tent site

Liked good location

Disliked big field , but too many tents close together, no privacy. tent allowed to pitch right on top of me, compounded by a fire, with smoke blowing in my tent and car. i am a recovering Asthmatic, why is this permitted ?

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Seriously Barry? You arrived on a Thursday, there were about 5 other tents on a 6 acre field.
The fact you are a recovering asthmatic is hardly the campsites fault or neighbouring campers.
You sound more like a grumpy old man who was upset because you thought your daughter had paid for the camping and she hadn't.
Our campers love the fact they can have a fire.

Local attractions

There’s bike hire in Hadfield (five minutes’ drive) for cyclists keen to embark on the Pennine Cycleway Route 68, which can be accessed from the camping field along with the Pennine Bridleway and Trans Pennine Trail. There is a connection to the Pennine Way at Torside Reservoir (10 minutes). If you’re just not that into the long-distance, serious hiking stuff, you can still get plenty of bracing Derbyshire air fishing at Arnfield Fly Fishery (five minutes’ walk), practising your swing on 18-hole golf courses (20 minutes) and exploring Pennine trails on horseback (15 minutes). Birdwatchers might get lucky and see curlews and red grouse flitting around the water at Dove Stone Nature Reserve (25 minutes), or woodpeckers, long-tailed tits and owls at Eastwood Nature Reserve (10 minutes). Keep an eye out for hares, red grouse and warblers as you circumnavigate Ladybower Reservoir (half an hour), or see if you can spot harriers high above rugged Kinder Scout (50 minutes).
