  • Peaceful family-friendly Peak District site next door to a farm
  • A 15-minute drive from Castleton and 20 minutes from Bakewell
  • Seating area with a woodburning stove; direct access to scenic walks
Welcome to the Peak District: pretty hikes, miles of countryside, historic properties and country lanes. Down one of those country lanes is Sweet Knoll Camping, a rather lovely (and very much peaceful) place to stay next door to a pretty Peak District farm. Spectacular views? You bet. This central part of the Peak District is particularly gorgeous, and the pitches have views of sloping green fields. A launch pad for lovely hikes? Indeed. There are a variety of walks guests can take directly from the site. If that’s not satisfying enough already, the local pub is only a 15-minute walk away and can be added as a pitstop for pints or local grub. The family-run site has a Belfast sink where guests can set about washing up their dishes. In the same washing-up area, there’s seating next to a woodburning stove. There’s also a toilet on site, but guests should note that there are no shower facilities. Barbecues are permitted at Sweet Knoll Camping should guests fancy grilling their own dinner rather than tracking down food in the local towns or villages, like Bakewell (20 minutes’ drive) and Castleton (15 minutes). The closest shops are a 10-minute drive away, or there’s a farm shop a five-minute drive away.

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked: Absolutely stunning views at this campsite and we will definitely be back a few more times this year! 😊 The site only has basic facilities with only 1 toilet, however this didn't bother us, we loved how this felt kind of close to wild camping. Plenty of gorgeous scenic walks nearby and we spent an evening in the local pub too which is within walking distance. 😊

Liked: Great location, 15 minutes from Castleton. We got up and did Mam Tor for sunrise, it made it easier only being 10-15 minutes away. Toilets and washing up area was kept very clean. We stayed for one night and it was a perfect set up.

Liked: Perfect place to stay, very clean and well kept.

Disliked: Nothing to do with the place. Unfortunately there was a family too loud and I had to leave earlier than expected. The problem were not the children but the temperamental father shouting at them.

Liked: The farm had lovely views and was so peaceful and quiet. In a lovely area not too far from Buxton village which would definitely recommend visiting. Lovely place to visit if you also have children.

Disliked: I have absolutely no idea why anyone would recommend the local pub - The Devonshire Arms. Wished we hadn't bothered booking for a meal. They didn't even pour my wine in a wine glass. It was in a glass you would have a cordial in. The food was ghastly. Bisto gravy, undercooked chips, I've had a nicer frozen pie from Aldi (definitely not homemade steak and ale pie) My partner got a huge slab of Stilton on his burger that was hard and stone cold - I think the chef should know your supposed to melt the cheese on the burger. Quality of beef burger not good. Very over priced for what you get, restaurant prices but Greene King quality. There was only one other table in there and it was absolutely no wonder. Not a nice atmosphere.

Liked: The camping site was beautiful, it had a homely feeling, and great location in the middle of Peak District! Main highlight the host was amazing! Very attentive, caring and approachable! Although there’s no showers the toilets are maintained throughout the day.

Local attractions

Castleton (15 minutes’ drive) village is a very cute local spot. Its show caverns (including Peak Cavern, Treak Cliff Cavern and Blue John Cavern) have contributed to its fame, but the stone houses and views of Hope Valley and the High Peak are also ravishing. A walk up Mam Tor (15 minutes) is likely to please outdoorsy types. The five-mile route passes through heather moors on Kinder Scout and a reservoir before reaching the 517-metre hilltop in the High Peak. After your climb, you might decide that the Bakewell tarts and puddings of Bakewell (20 minutes) are the next natural course of action. The market town also has access to the Monsal Trail, a cycling route through old railway tunnels. Tuck into your sweet treats on the riverfront, a popular spot with other consumers of the famous tarts. There are some splendid walks around Chatsworth House (half an hour) should you crave more outdoorsy days out. Royal family members live in the house, so interested folks can book a tour to see some of the historic rooms (and the surrounding 105-acre garden and farmyard if they so wish).
