View from the camping field

  • Peaceful off-grid pop-up site in the Peak District National Park
  • New Mills 10 minutes’ drive and Chatsworth House 40 minutes
  • Grass pitches with views to Cracken Edge; local bar 20 minutes’ walk
Set at the foot of Cracken Edge and with spectacular views over Derbyshire fields, hills and valleys, Laneside Farm is a peaceful family‑run pop‑up site on a working farm. The camping field is edged by mature trees, and you get to wake up to the sound of birdsong, watch spectacular sunsets and fall asleep to virtual silence. This is an off-grid site that’s pretty much as nature intended it, with portable toilets and a washing-up sink being the only facilities. You’ll need to come armed with torches, batteries and drinking water, but as soon as you’ve settled in your adventures can start, as a network of mountain biking trails and woodland hiking routes begin right at the field gate. You can soon be up on the moorland without needing to drive anywhere, so it’s great for those of you who want to park up and forget all about the car. Despite its peaceful rural setting, the site is within easy walking distance of local comforts in Buxworth village (20 minutes’ walk). The friendly bar has a small play park outside, while other pubs in Chinley (five minutes’ drive) and Whitehough (10 minutes) serve menus of homemade dishes that taste even better after you’ve spent the day outdoors.

What customers say

A peaceful, wild-feeling site with great views. Appreciated for quiet, clean loos & wash-up. Good for walks, pubs nearby. Narrow access, sloping field, so pitch up early for tents. Occasional flight noise. Straightforward check-in after early confusion.

Unpowered grass tent or motorhome site

Liked Nice and quiet which was ideal in August when every other campsite seemed to be fully booked and very overcrowded!

Nice basic campsite in a nice peaceful setting.

2 portaloos cleaned daily, running sink with hand soap and washing up liquid and small bins (we chose to take our rubbish home).

Lovely views and access to walks.

Check in and payment easy and smooth.

Disliked The field is on a slope with a few flatter areas so arrive early if you are coming with a tent!

Can be loud at night due to Manchester airport flight paths so bring earplugs.

Unfortunately we had some disrespectful camping neighbours on our stay who were shouting until gone 1am, possibly reminding people of campsite etiquette/rules upon check in may have prevented this

Unpowered grass tent or motorhome site

Liked Lovely views and was greeted by the owners when we arrived, who sent us to our pitch. The services were basic but adequate - porta-potties and kitchen sink with cold running water.
The site is also in a lovely location and well signposted.

Unpowered grass tent or motorhome site

Liked Lovely open space, calm and quiet with lush views.
The addition of a tap and sink is greatly appreciated 😊

Disliked Check in process could be made more obvious, i had to hunt through my email to figure it out. To check in and pay, Holly responded very quickly to my call and was very helpful.
Grass was quite long though field pretty clean. Its nice to have a bit of wild nature for the kids to play on anyway 👍🏻

Unpowered grass tent or motorhome site

Liked ovely peaceful little pop-up campsite with beautiful countryside views. Very basic, but that’s part of the charm. The field was quiet, the two portable toilets were spotless, and there was a sink for washing up. We didn’t meet the owner, but it still felt relaxed and welcoming. A great simple stopover if you don’t need lots of facilities.
Nice war memorial pub 13 min walk away . Very friendly and dog friendly

Disliked Quite narrow lanes to get to site . We were fine in smaller van . However there was a motorhome on site

Local attractions

From the pitches, you can venture out on to the High Peak on foot or on two wheels. Alternatively, stroll down to Buxworth (20 minutes’ walk) to amble alongside the Peak Forest Canal or take a barge trip past old limestone kilns to lofty Marple Aqueduct. You can also walk the Sett Valley Trail from New Mills (10 minutes’ drive) to Hayfield along a former railway line. If you’re keen to discover Derbyshire’s rich industrial heritage, linger awhile in New Mills. From this former mill town, you can walk over the River Goyt on the aerial Millennium Walkway, admire the exterior of Torr Vale Mill, an old cotton mill that was a linchpin of the Industrial Revolution (it’s open to the public occasionally) and walk over a 19th-century bridge built to unite New Mills across the sandstone river gorge. Some of the biggest cultural attractions in the national park are close by too; you can tour the ornate interior of Chatsworth House (40 minutes), meander through its extensive grounds to the River Derwent and treat the kids to donkey cuddles at the petting farm. The elegant spa town of Buxton (20 minutes) has a schedule of events at its well-known theatre, plus Derbyshire beer to sample at the namesake brewery.
