  • Back-to-basics Peak District site, a five-minute drive from Hartington
  • Peak Wildlife Park 15 minutes’ drive; Alton Towers half an hour
  • Dark night skies and expansive views, plus a fresh water supply
If you intend to explore the Peak District on your next holiday, Gateham Grange Camping, a family-friendly site between Hartington and Alstonefield (a five-minute drive from either) might just be the accommodation you’re looking for. You’ll be staying on a working farm (and since cows and dogs don’t always play well together, no canine buddies are allowed), and the large field can be booked for exclusive use by groups. In other words, this is just the place for the annual family gathering. This is prime walking country, so lace up your boots and start exploring nearby areas like the Manifold Valley (10 minutes’ drive), with sites like the dramatic Thor’s Cave, and the Dove Valley, where highlights include Baley Hill and Wolfscote Dale (both within a 10-minute drive). On site are three portable toilets, a plumbed outdoor stainless-steel sink and a fresh water supply. Please be aware that there is no hot water available. However, the back-to-basics approach is more than compensated for by splendid, far-reaching views of the surrounding hills and the starry spectacle of the night sky. There is also good road access, and the local bus service (Moorlands Connect, bookable via telephone or app) arranges doorstep pick-up and return to local towns and villages. It even has room for bikes, so if you cycled too far and cannot face the ride back to base, you’re sorted. There are convenience stores and a local farm shop in Hartington, which also has several pubs.

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked: Facilities were spotless, portaloos were very clean, smelled very fresh, no signs of any bugs or crawlies in the toilets at all. We had the field to ourselves with no neighbouring campers and it made us feel very at home. The owner kept in contact and was updating us consistently, always there to help and was very friendly and polite. Local farmer popped by to say hello and he was extremely friendly too! Location is beautiful! Sun rise, sun set, thunderstorm in the distant and starry nights, we had it all and it was fantastic! Super happy! Ground was soft enough to put pegs in and strong enough to keep everything down, just seemed absolutely perfect for tents and our gazebo very very healthy pitch! Fire pit that was provided really gave us a fantastic time roasting marshmallows with melted chocolate.

Disliked: Just that the grass was a little long making rounders a challenge when running through or finding the ball, also made football difficult to play but at the same time, the extra challenge brought us many laughs!

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked: Nice location, ideal for walker and hikers, different ground levels, we loved the fact that we asked the owners for an early check-in and we got quick positive response, the lady was very helpful and co-operative she even managed to drop some salt from her own house when we needed it for our cooking in the camp. We had to check out late with no problem.

Disliked: We were happy with all the services

Local attractions

You might not be able to p-p-pick up a penguin at Peak Wildlife Park (15 minutes’ drive), but you can sure get up close and personal with one and help at feeding times. This conservation-focused wildlife park also houses otters, meerkats and giant rabbits, and there are outdoor and indoor play areas. If it’s a hot day, and the only place you want to be is near/in the water, head to Tittesworth Reservoir (25 minutes), where you can hire a canoe or paddleboard, stroll along the wildflower-dotted shore, or have a picnic with views of herons and curlews. If the kids demand adrenaline-fuelled rides, take them to Alton Towers theme park (half an hour), where they can let rip on roller coasters (including one with a staggering 14 loops) and drop towers. Younger children can try the gentler attractions in CBeebies Land, and everybody can wind down at the end of the day with a stroll through the peaceful gardens.
