General

  • Family-friendly, peaceful site on the River Thames near Pangbourne
  • Basildon Park 10 minutes' walk away; Oxford 40 minutes' drive
  • Within the grounds of Beale Park, with wildlife park and watersports

Fans of a watery view or few, roll up to Berkshire site Otters Camping, within Beale Park just over a mile from Pangbourne.

Lake view or river view? They’re both on offer here – the pitches look out over a lovely lake (which is also available for swimming and paddleboarding, with free rental wetsuits for site guests), with the River Thames just behind. Strolls along the Thames Path come highly recommended (it’ll take you 25 minutes or so to wander to Pangbourne for pubs and restaurants), as do quieter days of simply sitting on site and soaking up the views out over the river to the hills beyond.

That proximity to the Thames Path means that this would be a fine stopover for those tackling the whole of that long-distance challenge – as indeed it would for those following the Ridgeway National Trail or King Alfred’s Way, which both also pass by.

Even those not planning on multi-day hikes can ditch the car for a while on a stay here: wander over to the National Trust’s Basildon Park, just over the road, or take advantage of your guest discount to meet the critters at Beale Park’s wildlife park. There’s also a company running outdoor activities in the adjacent field – see if you can sign up there for laser tag, archery, clay shooting or a run on the obstacle course.

The peaceful pitches here have been set up with access to running water and toilets, and there’s a small food shop on site too. Barbecues and campfires are permitted for your alfresco eats, and you’re also allowed to bring dogs along (let’s face it, they’ll love all this walking…)

This is a lovely place for camping, right next to the lake, a cafe on site. Nice forest walks for when it gets darker. Wasn’t too busy when we went either. Toilets weren’t amazing but they are portaloos so didn’t expect them to be. Will defo go again.

Absolutely stunning area, great location with different activities surrounding the campsite. Field was big enough and the ground was good for pitching tents.

    Disliked:

It was only a field with 6 porta-loo's. Looking further in to the website it states toilets are there but I think it should be clearer what amenities are not there.
There was no clear reception, just a lad, who was very friendly, in a tent.

It was quiet with no loud music

    Disliked:

That the toilets where only cleaned once in our 3 day visit, there for lacking in hygiene. Luckily we had taken our own toilet paper and hand sanitizer.
The entrance to the campsite was not easy to find and if hadn’t been for asking at the ice cream shop, we would never have found it, or found out the ‘blue’ tent was where to check in, not enough signage.

Nice location. Large field so campers can spread out. Even when it got busier, it didn't feel cramped or noisy at all.
Private lake nearby with really friendly staff so we could join their membership scheme and enjoy a spot of swimming.
Owners at the camp were really friendly and welcoming. Staff weren't always on site but they were easily contacted by phone if we ever needed anything or had a question.
Toilets (portaloos) and bins were emptied halfway through our stay so those facilities are looked after.
Seconds away from the river thames and great walks!
Great wildlife All around from birds of prey flying low near the tents at time, mallards, terrapins, owls, bats ect..

    Disliked:

Train line is rather close and the noise from passing trains can be a little annoying at night if you are not used to it.

Big field, lots of space. It was fully booked but only had about 15-20 tents in a massive field so you were at least 20-30 m from others. Enough portaloos, very clean on arrival but next morning a bit grubby, I presume they would have been cleaned again later. There usually was toilet paper available. 2 taps for water. in what is essentially a bit cow field. There is a lake side cafe close by open from 9.30- 5 pm. They do pizzas ( I think £7.50 each and also some breakfast items I think, we only got ice creams and drinks). Fire pits allowed. Close by river and tiny lake. Although you have to pay for open water swimming in the tiny lake.

    Disliked:

No showers!!! Caravan site next door generator and lights on at night - if you are a light sleeper bring ear plugs.
