  • Spacious site in the Bedfordshire countryside, just off the A1
  • A mile and a half from Sandy; Bedford 20 minutes' drive
  • Three miles from Shuttleworth's aerial displays
Captivated by all things canvas? Besotted with bivouacking? Then you'll be in good company at People Love Camping, a superbly spacious site in the Bedfordshire countryside just off the A1. With flat and level pitches, a toilet block and footpaths, there's all you need here to experience the simple pleasures of time spent outdoors (please note there are no showers, however). And should the charms of that slower pace of life start to wear off? Shuttleworth's air museum (three miles away) hosts regular aerial displays that can supply an extra dose of excitement. This farm site produces fresh eggs and other goodies that are available to buy daily throughout the summer months. For more elaborate provisions, you'll need to look a little (but not much) further afield to Bridge Farm Shop, three quarters of a mile away on the river Ivel, or to the supermarkets, pubs and cafés that line the streets of Sandy (a mile and a half from base).

Local attractions

Shuttleworth (five minutes' drive), with its several annual air shows, is the obvious must-see attraction nearby, but the surrounding area has a lot more to offer. RSPB The Lodge (10 minutes) will be a draw for all birdwatchers, while historic sites like Moggerhanger House (five minutes), Willington Dovecote (10 minutes) and the Wimpole Estate (25 minutes) are all intriguing inroads into this part of England's past. Up next, some sport – perhaps beginning at the John O'Gaunt Golf Club (10 minutes), where the greens are well-maintained and the views smashing. Sandy Sports Centre (five minutes) is also close for when you fancy a trip to the gym or to a floodlit all-weather pitch, with the nearest public swimming pools available in either St Neots (15 minutes) or Bedford (20 minutes). Finally, there's Bedford Microlight Centre (five minutes' drive or a 20-minute walk) if you'd like to learn how to fly under expert supervision. And to round it all off? It's very much up to you, but popular options include a city sightseeing trip aboard a punt in Cambridge (40 minutes), taking off to the top-notch rides on offer at Gulliver's Land Theme Park (30 minutes) or investigating the wartime past at Bletchley Park (40 minutes).
