  • Secluded site off the grid in northern Zambia
  • Go offline in a peaceful escape, less than 1km from the Nakonde river
  • See the clear night sky away from the pollution of city lights
King’s Highway Rest Camp, Kalungu, feels almost custom-made for anyone who wants to get off the grid... Out in the African bush of northern Zambia, this is a wifi-free escape from the modern world – switch off completely and let your smartphone fulfil its true purpose: taking photos of spectacular African sunsets. The site at Kalungu is a haven for relaxation, with little to do but adapt to a slower pace of life. Sit in the dappled light outside your bungalow, shaded from the hot African sun by the teak trees, or wander down to the Nakonde river less than a kilometre away listening and looking out for the many bird species that call the site home. Far from the pollution of city lights, King’s Highway is a top spot for stargazing too: cook up something tasty under the thatched roof of the communal kitchen then tuck in sitting outside your bungalow while turning your gaze skywards to take in the clear night sky. Remember: ‘off the grid’ means way off. The nearest shops and markets are nearly an hour away in Nakonde, so be sure to stock up before you arrive.

Local attractions

A lot of the draw of this site is in its secluded nature – this is where you go to get away from it all, helped by the fact that the nearest town, Nakonde, is 50 kilometres away. Continuing your journey beyond King’s Highway, you could head west for 250 kilometres to reach the spectacular Chishimba Falls and explore the caves behind the waterfalls at this sacred place of power for the Bemba people. North-west of King’s Highway, also 250 kilometres away, is Mpulungu, a town at the southern tip of one of Africa’s Great Lakes: Lake Tanganyika. Further up the eastern coast of Lake Tanganyika, and into Tanzania, pay a visit to the stunning Kalambo Falls. Less than five hours north of King’s Highway across the Tanzanian border, fulfil your safari dreams at Uwanda Game Reserve, keeping your eyes peeled for hippos, elephants, antelopes, zebras and the rare albino giraffe. Just remember to stay out of the waters of Lake Rukwa and be sure to watch out for crocs... Another of Africa’s Great Lakes, Lake Malawi, is less than five hours to the east. It’s a top spot for fishing, with more species of fish in its waters than anywhere else on the planet.
