  • Peaceful campground with its own lava tube on the Big Island
  • La’aloa Beach Park an hour’s drive; Kailua-Kona an hour and 15 minutes
  • Onsite dog park; spectacular beaches within a half-hour drive
Luxuriant nature all around; adventures exploring a large lava tube right on the property; and spectacular beaches within a half-hour drive – that’s a pretty awesome trio of attractions, right? And that’s what awaits at Hawaii Lava Tube Campground, a peaceful wild camping site (but not too wild – read on to find out about its many amenities) in the south of the Island of Hawai’i (also known as Big Island, also known as the home of Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park). Couples, families and big groups get a warm ‘aloha’ at this lush site in a gorgeously wild and scenic location, right on the slopes of a volcano. Your four-legged friends are welcome, too: there’s a dog park where they can get a little exercise, or they can follow you on your wanderings. Not all areas of the national park allow dogs, though, so be sure to check in advance. The site’s owners know the island like the back of their hands, and they will also be able to direct you to excellent (and dog-friendly, if necessary) spots. On-site amenities include a toilet block, a shower lined with aromatic cedar wood (for a sauna-like feel) and a washing-up area. Parents of small children might appreciate the baby changing room, and if you plan on doing your own cooking there’s a communal fridge freezer. Please note that there is no drinkable water on site, so it’s best to come prepared: the nearest shops are a 10-minute drive away, along the Mamalahoa Highway, where there’s also a handful of restaurants.

Local attractions

Until the early 1800s, Pu’uhonua O Honaunau National Historical Park (50 minutes’ drive) was a sanctuary for people who had broken one of the ancient laws; if the culprit managed to make it to this outpost on the west coast of the island, they would be absolved. Today, visitors can admire carved statues of ancient Hawaiian gods, as well as native birds. A small beach fringed by tall palm trees and lapped by impossibly clear waters, La’aloa Beach Park (an hour) is also known as Magic (or Disappearing) Sands because at high tide, the ocean covers it almost completely, leaving only a rocky shoreline. This is a popular spot for swimming and bodyboarding, and there’s usually a lifeguard on duty. In Kailua-Kona (an hour and 15 minutes), the pier is the place to start your sportfishing and snorkeling adventures. A former royal abode, Hulihe‘e Palace is an elegant mansion housing a museum with royal portraits and feather standards.
