A stay at Diamond Gulch Camp might make you feel like you’re recapturing the lifestyle of the pioneers of the Old West. The site sits on a 320-hectare ranch that was once the winter home of the Miwok people, a Native American tribe that panned for gold in the mid-1800s. You won’t have to rough it like 19th-century prospectors, though – this family-friendly site five minutes' drive from the Gold Rush town of Groveland has handy facilities including a portable toilet, basin and washing-up area. And if you want to spend an evening under the stars, you can keep warm with a campfire in a firepit – or light up a barbecue. Nicely level grass and earth pitches sit in the shade of tall trees. Forest covers about half the ranch, and with leafy canopies comes assorted birdlife – is there a better way to wake up in the morning than to a lively dawn chorus? For more wildlife (including deer, chipmunks and bears), you can head into Yosemite National Park (35 minutes’ drive). Here you will be greeted by spectacular landscapes of forested granite mountains, dramatic waterfalls and vertiginous observation points. From Tunnel View, for example, you can look down on Yosemite Valley, with Bridalveil Fall, the El Capitan peak and the iconic Half Dome mountain (which, incidentally, is visible from the site, too). This is a top spot for active pursuits – from kayaking and fishing, to rock climbing and cycling, as well as winter sports such as cross-country skiing. Just be sure to check for permits before you set off.

Liked: We had a fantastic stay at John’s beautiful campground! The pitches are all well equipped with fireplace and table, they’re nice and spacious. And there is very little light pollution so a great spot for stargazing. During our stay John has been the most friendly, easygoing and welcoming host, showing us around his land and helping us find our way. Would definitely recommend this campsite!

Local attractions

On a hot day, take a refreshing dip at Rainbow Pool (20 minutes’ drive), a swimming hole surrounded by vegetation, with a small waterfall and rocks from which to dive. After cooling off, you can linger here for a picnic (you can grab anything you need from Groveland). Thrill-seekers make a beeline for the Tuolumne River (half an hour), a popular spot for whitewater rafting, with an 18-mile stretch punctuated by steep rapids. When you’re not busy paddling to stay afloat, you might be able to take in the splendid riverside landscape of alpine meadows and dramatic rock formations. More outdoor activities await at Stanislaus National Forest (an hour and 15 minutes), a wilderness area with a vast network of hiking and mountain-biking trails, plus trout-filled streams and lakes for canoeing.
