Come and get your kicks... Route 66 Golden Shores RV Park is on the shores of Goose Lake in Topock, Arizona, a small town a minute's drive away from the longest intact stretch of the legendary Route 66. With Interstate 40 passing five miles away as well, this is a useful location for those making their own great American road trips. A short drive from the park brings you into the desert, where you can hike, drive ATVs or search for colourful agates that you can take back for park staff to demonstrate cutting and polishing techniques. There are also several lakes close by, with activities including fishing and watersports, and the Colorado River is a 10-minute drive away. For more outdoor pursuits, take a hike in the Mojave National Preserve, visit the Havasu National Wildlife Refuge or drive a couple of hours to see the incredible Grand Canyon. The facilities on this friendly and shady park include a clubhouse, dog park and free wifi. The clean and modern amenities block has toilets, showers and a baby bathroom, and there's also a launderette with washing machines and tumble dryers.

Local attractions

Despite all the deserts, you're in a devilishly good spot for water-based activities here: you can access Goose Lake from the park to fish from the shore or by boat for blue gill, catfish, striped large- and small-mouth bass, or make for the mighty Colorado River, a 10-minute drive away for canoeing and kayaking and boat rides through the impressive Topock Gorge. There's a multitude of watersports to be tried out on Lake Havasu, 40 minutes away, along with the startling sight of the original London Bridge, shipped out in 1967. If it's wilderness hikes and encounters with wildlife you're looking for, head to the Havasu National Wildlife Refuge (20 minutes), where snow geese, coyote, bobcats and desert bighorn sheep roam the mountain vastness, make the half-hour trip to the Dead Mountains Wilderness Area or experience the woodlands, cliffs, canyons and singing dunes of the Mojave National Preserve, an hour away. Delve into the history of the area in the former mining town of Oatman (half an hour) for a flavour of the Old West, complete with burros roaming the streets, staged gunfights and the Black Mountains providing such a filmic backdrop you expect Clint Eastwood to pop up in a poncho. Further afield, the unnatural wonders of Las Vegas are a two-hour drive away while the southern side of the natural, but no less wonderful Grand Canyon can be reached in around three and three-quarters of an hour.
