  • 180 acres of forest and hiking trails, minutes from town
  • In Virginia's Historic Triangle
  • Heated pool, jumping pillows, dog play area and gem mining station
How would you fancy pitching up among 180 acres of spectacular forest and hiking trails, all close to the conveniences of town? And forging a glittering career as a gem miner right on site? Base yourself at Williamsburg KOA Campground for a Virginia-based break in the state's Historic Triangle, minutes from Colonial Williamsburg, Jamestown and Yorktown. Striking gold here is the site's Cold River mining sluice, where guests can forage for gemstones, arrowheads, fossils, and other hidden treasures: do be sure to get your photo taken at the big 'I struck gold' board afterwards… Also around are a heated pool, open until October and with a splash pad next to it for tiddlers; a volleyball court; a dog play area and two jumping pillows for use free of charge. The team runs regular events in the summer season, including a kids' club, open air cinema, wagon rides, rocket flying and bingo. You'll also need to leave some time for the on-site Creek Side Trail, a 20-minute or more hike through the woods past Skimino Creek via the habitat's trees, plants, otters, turtles and ducks – you might even see an eagle if you're especially eagle-eyed.

Local attractions

The site's setting in Virginia's Historic Triangle has it perfectly placed for heritage days out around Williamsburg, Jamestown and Yorktown, three vital cities in the story of the United States (Jamestown was the first permanent English settlement in the new country; Williamsburg was the scene of the 1775  Gunpowder Incident, one of the lead-ups to the American Revolution, and Yorktown was where Cornwallis finally surrendered to George Washington, ending the  American Revolutionary War). Around four million tourists visit this region every year to see its historical sites: you could (should) wander around the Colonial Williamsburg site to see 18th-century local life at America's biggest outdoor history park, and potter around the Jamestown Settlement, another living history museum showing how people lived in these days of yore. There's also the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown, near the site where American and French troops won the last battle of the American Revolution in 1781. Artillery firing demonstrations held daily at the affiliated Yorktown Victory Center. And if the kids are sniffy at all that? How fortuitous then that Williamsburg KOA Campground is close to two big theme parks, Busch Gardens Williamsburg and Water Country USA, just round the corner from Busch Gardens Williamsburg and Virginia's biggest waterpark.
