  • Friendly lakeside park set among East Texas pines near Crockett town
  • Within easy reach of Ratcliff Lake Recreation Area's swimming beach
  • Fishing for bass, catfish, crappie and bream in the park's own lake
Come on down to Crockett Family Resort for kid-friendly family fun, peaceful pine woods and a big dollop of trophy bass fishing thrown in for good measure; for your fishy fun, this property has its own boat launch, fishing pier and boat dock serving a lake chockfull of black bass, catfish, crappie and bream, with catches often weighing between five and 10lbs. Surrounded by hills covered from peak to foot in East Texas pines, this well-manicured park has a spacious accommodation area shaded by huge mature pines and with a lovely vista out over the lake, where you can take a dip if you're partial to swimming in wild water; alternatively, there's an outdoor pool right by the lake that you can spend your time sploshing around in. On the same bit of lakeshore as the pool is a spacious play area with swings, a slide and a big wooden climbing rig for kids to play on, as well as a putting green, a volleyball court, shuffleboard and a pavilion with picnic tables. Handily, this little recreation zone has its own toilet block to save you having to go back to the accommodation area for your comfort breaks. For food at the park head to the café, or pick up whatever you need for your camping stove breakfasts, afternoon picnics and evening barbecues at the well-stocked convenience store. The amenities block, which houses a laundry room and accessible showers and toilets, has been conveniently placed right in the middle of the accommodation area, so you won't have far to traipse first thing in the morning or right before bed. Free wifi is available throughout the entire property for guests too.

Local attractions

Crockett Family Resort is almost smack bang in the middle of Houston (126 miles), Dallas (165 miles) and Austin (182 miles), and is a mere 11 miles from downtown Crockett, where you'll find music venues, bars, restaurants and several museums and fine examples of colonial architecture, such as the 19th-century Downes-Aldrich House, rumoured to be the most spectacular of its kind in the locale. The 660-acre Mission Tejas State Park in the East Texas Piney Woods region is within 40 minutes' drive of Crockett Family Resort. Plod around the hiking and nature trails there before you pitstop for a picnic, and then continue with a bit of fishing in the pond that lies nearby. Davy Crockett National Forest, Fairfield Lake State Park and Ratcliff Lake Recreation Area – a United States Forest Service-owned ground with a splendid swimming beach – are within easy reach too. History buffs are also well catered to around here: several good historic monuments are a short drive away, such as Jim Hogg Historic Site in Rusk, Texas Forestry Museum in Lufkin, and Weeping Mary's Caddo Mounds State Historic Site – an archaeological and culture spot that's made up of a village and a ceremonial centre with a burial mound and a couple of platform mounds. For a car-free tour of the area, hop on the Texas State Railroad and relax with a drink and nibbles while you're taken on a serene four-hour steam train journey along 25 miles of the Piney Woods region between the Texan cities of Rusk and Palestine.
