- Quiet rural retreat five minutes’ drive from Waldo in central Florida
- Gainesville 20 minutes’ drive; Kanapaha Botanical Gardens 35 minutes
- Working farm with free-range animals, wildlife and a fairy shop
If you’re looking for an unusual rural hideaway, there’s one right here at Firefly Farms, five minutes’ drive from Waldo in central Florida. A former sanctuary for retired circus animals, this small farm is being renovated and currently has friendly hens (you’ll have lots of fresh eggs for breakfast), ducks and geese for you to meet, as well as goats, a tortoise and a spoiled turkey called Percy.
This property is home to hand-raised squirrels and flying squirrels, while lightning bugs flitter during their seasonal arrival and the stars are amazingly bright on clear nights. It has a backdrop of thousands of acres of woods, swamps and wilderness that are home to panthers, bears and bobcats. Luckily, they shy away from humans and the owner’s two dogs keep an eye out 24 hours a day, so there’s no problem with predators.
Sitting in 20 tree-shaded acres, the camping area is at the northern end of the property, where you can pick any spot and set up your tent. As this is wild camping, there are no facilities beyond the stunning scenery, so please pack drinking water and torches to bring with you.
There are fairy nooks in the camping area, as well as a shop selling a selection of handmade fairy-related items. The owner is also happy to help you pot your own cuttings and plants to take home with you – and you can book tarot readings while you’re there too.

Local attractions
Firefly Farms is close to lots of popular Florida destinations. If you fancy an urban day out, the lively university city of Gainesville (20 minutes’ drive) has buzzing street markets and an equally buzzing foodie scene. You can treat the kids to a day at Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens or boardwalk strolls at Tree Hill Nature Center in Jacksonville (an hour), before settling down to eat local seafood at restaurants on the Mayport Shrimp Trail.
If you’d rather be out in the country with your offspring, the flat, marshy expanses of Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park (half an hour) lend themselves to gentle bike rides and easy ambles. Older kids might like to head for Silver Springs State Park (50 minutes) and watch for manatees swimming in the pristine creeks, take guided cruises in glass-bottomed boats or go kayaking.
Keen on sustainability? Check out the conservation work being done to help endangered bats at Lubee Bat Conservancy (half an hour), or have an amble through the hummingbird gardens at Kanapaha Botanical Gardens (35 minutes).
