  • Rural Ohio campground on a working beef farm in Meigs County
  • Moonville Rail Trail 45 minutes' drive away; Hocking Hills 55 minutes
  • Rich in wildlife; stargazing, yoga, kayaking and fishing on site
Set on a working farm 10 minutes’ drive from Langsville in Meigs County, Ohio, Dexter Run Farms and Lodging is in the middle of the Appalachian Mountains; a stay here gives you access to an abundance of outdoor activities, or you can simply choose to bask quietly and enjoy the peace of the countryside. Surrounded by forest and with spectacular views of mountain ridges and valleys, the campground has lots of quiet corners and woodland glades for playing outdoor games, practising yoga or sunbathing. Tons of hiking trails snake across the 300-acre farm to a variety of views from different elevations, and miles of streams and waterways give you the chance to go kayaking and fishing (catch and release only) – all gear can be hired on site. Begin your mornings drinking coffee, watching cows graze and listening to the birds, crickets and frogs that will keep you entertained all day. When it’s breakfast time, the owners sell farm-fresh eggs and bacon for a fry up, or you can bag some sausages and grass-fed beef steaks to cook on the charcoal grill for supper. And in summer, when you’re cosied up around the firepit on a clear night, take time to look up – the night skies can often wow you with dancing displays of stars as well as lightning bugs.

Local attractions

While you can spend hours hiking, fishing and kayaking on the campsite, if you want to see something of rural Ohio, grab your boots and get out into the trails in Vinton Furnace State Forest (35 minutes’ drive). Kids travelling with you? Introduce them to walking on the gentle Moonville Rail Trail (45 minutes) along an old railway line and through forest, or take them horse riding in Zaleski State Forest (40 minutes). Combine a family hike with some local history in Buckeye Furnace State Park (half an hour), where you’ll come across a scattering of ages-old mills, and a reconstruction of a charcoal-fired iron blast furnace last used in 1894. Driving a bit further afield brings you to Hocking Hills State Park (55 minutes), where you can go wild swimming in pristine pools at the foot of waterfalls, take a tour of dramatic Old Man’s Cave and scramble through river gorges.
