  • Peaceful and relaxed waterside resort a few minutes' drive from town
  • Within 20 minutes of Lake Bunyonyi: transport and tours available
  • Restaurant, gift shop, play area, games room and TV room
A resort by a river in a lush wildlife haven in Uganda’s Western Region and Kabale District… Riverside Resort Hotel Kabale (less than five minutes’ drive from the town of Kabale) sounds like a pretty top spot for African adventures. Although it’s centrally placed for getting out and about, the site is set up for serenely peaceful times back at a comfy base: it’s in a quiet setting with loads of green space – just take a gander at those fab pics. And as for that getting out and about? It’s an easy 20 minutes from here to Africa’s second deepest lake – the stunningly scenic Bunyonyi – for island hopping, swimming (no crocs, hippos or nasty critters here), canoeing, hilly hikes, watersports and fishing, plus plenty of wildlife watching. If that sounds like a lot to get up to in one day, never fear… there’s free breakfast for all guests so there’s no chance of lacking energy, and dinner in the restaurant will satisfy any wild hungers. Spent too much time living the high life to nab souvenirs for the crowd at home? There’s a gift shop on site for last minute gets.

Local attractions

It’s an outdoorsy paradise around here… the site is less than an hour’s drive from Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, where there are plenty of hiking trails to follow and encounters with gorillas are just a gorilla trekking permit away. If that’s not enough gorilla interaction, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park – Uganda’s other top gorilla trekking spot – is an hour and 40 minutes away near Kisoro. Of course, there’s far more in Uganda for ardent wildlife watchers. Queen Elizabeth National Park is a little over three hours from base for cape buffalo, climbing lions, leopards, hyenas and elephants, and immediate tracks should be made for Kyambura Wildlife Reserve (within the park) for a little monkeying around – the spectacular Kyambura Gorge is called ‘valley of the apes’ for a reason, and chimpanzee treks come highly recommended. If longer jaunts in the car aren’t a problem, or if Riverside Resort is just a pitstop on a grand adventure, there’s plenty to do further afield – the Ugandan capital, Kampala, is a seven-hour drive away, and a must-visit for Lubiri Palace (and the notorious torture chambers of Idi Amin), the Kasubi Tombs, cultural museums, and casinos.
