- Island hopping, gorilla treks and nightlife tours arranged by team
- Hammocks, gardens, bar and restaurant with free breakfast daily
Thoughts of organising a dream getaway getting stressful? Head to Hawk’s Eye Lodge Bunyonyi, a family-friendly site 20 minutes’ drive from Kabale in western Uganda, where all the pain is taken out of planning.
The pretty and hilly site overlooks Lake Bunyonyi, the second-deepest lake in Africa, so the trip starts off on a high note. Embrace the relaxing vibe on day one with a few hours’ lounging in hammocks with views over the lake, keeping an eye on the skies for a bit of birdwatching – there are plenty of feathered species hereabouts.
When it’s time to venture out, the team on site will arrange everything and there’s plenty to choose from, with guided treks, canoeing excursions, ziplining over the lake surface, island hopping tours and visits to local blacksmiths all on the menu, as well as night-time jaunts into Kabale for bars and dancing.
And speaking of menus, trying the local delicacies is a must… Bunyonyi is full of crayfish if seafood appeals, and the traditional nyama choma roast meat should be in high demand if not. Not a meat fan? There’s a restaurant on site to cater for all tastes (it even has free breakfast for guests to tuck into every morning) and a free kitchen facility where any other cravings can be taken care of.

Local attractions
For anyone whose thoughts of Africa translate into thoughts of safaris, treks and encounters with wild animals, Hawk’s Eye Lodge is extremely well placed. Starting with guided hikes around Lake Bunyonyi is a must, keeping eyes out for the plentiful wildlife and watching the skies for the birds that roost hereabouts.
Without question, the next stop should be the enticingly named Bwindi Impenetrable National Park an hour and 15 minutes’ drive away – half of the world’s gorilla population can be found here, so it’s unsurprisingly a top spot for gorilla treks (stumbling upon elephants, forest hogs, golden cats or colobus monkeys might be an added bonus).
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, two and a half hours from base, is a good alternative to Bwindi if another shot at gorilla spotting is needed, and lengthier jaunts to Queen Elizabeth National Park (three and a half hours) come highly recommended for buffalo, lions, leopards, hyena and elephants (yep, that’s the African safari dream…) While in Queen Elizabeth, monkey around on a detour to Kyambura Wildlife Reserve, where there’s chimp trekking in the Valley of the Apes.
Lucky enough to be continuing hols after leaving the site? Ugandan capital Kampala is a seven-hour journey from base for museums, palaces and historical sites.
