- Family-friendly Värmland eco-camping by Lake Övre Brocken
- A 20-minute drive to Torsby and to hiking trails around Hovfjället
- Organic produce, boat hire, firepits and kindling available on site
Wow, what a spot. Looking for peaceful lakeside pitches, sheltered by trees and surrounded by forested hills? Haste ye then to Camping Fristad, to spend nights under canvas in Värmland lake country near Torsby.
Run on a sustainable ethos, the site is owned by Dutch couple Kirsten and Anton, who oversee everything with a relaxed vibe. For instance, pitches are not marked out, so on arrival you can set up camp wherever you like.
Unless there is a local fire ban, spark up the firepit (they’re available for hire at reception, along with dry wood for a small charge) for barbecues – your hosts sell organic vegetables, fruits, eggs and jams, while basics can be picked up at the supermarket in Torsby (20 minutes’ drive).
There’s plenty to do around this scenic site. Pick up table-tennis bats at reception to have a knock around with family, or rent fishing rods and cast for pike on Lake Övre Brocken. Hire a boat for intrepid trips out onto the lake, or take a dip in the pristine waters.
Please note that dogs are welcome but they are not allowed to swim in the lake (please keep them on a lead on site and bring poop bags to clean up after them). There is a large garden where they can have a run about with your kids, and myriad hilly trails for hikes and cycle rides amid spectacular scenery (mountain bikes can be hired nearby if you don't have your own).

Local attractions
A stay at Camping Fristad places you in Sweden’s Värmland, a region of mountain peaks, forest and more than 10,000 lakes. You can explore this watery wilderness by road, by heading for serene lakes like Rottnen (55 minutes’ drive), or get out on the water yourself. Perhaps take a trip down the Klarälven river (50 minutes) on a wooden raft, or potter around on Lake Övre Brocken (from the site) by paddleboard or kayak.
A ski resort in winter and a hiking and cycling hub in summer, Hovfjället (20 minutes) has trails leading through pine forests (look out for moose among the trees), across alpine wetlands and moorland. There are well-signposted trails for all levels of ability, from family-friendly to pretty challenging.
Learn a little about the heritage of the area with a visit to the open-air Homestead Museum of Kollsberg, where traditional wooden houses and cottages have been reconstructed. If the kids have behaved, treat them to a splash around in the indoor pool at Torsby Badet (both 25 minutes) – a clever idea to keep up your sleeve in case the weather is disappointing.
