Folks who love a bit of a swim but have a phobia of chilly waters, this one’s for you. The pool at Camping El Roble Verde, a hillside site 10 minutes’ drive from Pobes, is not only heated but also has a sliding cover that allows for both balmy swims in the cooler months and poolside sunbathing in high summer. And that’s just one of the fab features that’s been installed by the thoughtful owners – others include the excellent decision to locate the restaurant and bar next to the playground so that nippers can continue their antics while the grownups slope off to a safe distance to get their paws round a drink or snack on the terrace. Active types should find plenty to keep them busy around the site, between games of football and basketball at the multisports court, batting balls about at the table tennis area and (for the small sorts) a whole heap of games, movies and workshops set up by staff in high season. And if you utter a resounding ‘pfft' to all this activity? The peaceful oak grove beckons, full of lovely shaded spots in which to read a book, snooze or just lie back and gaze up into the treetops. When it’s time to head out, that mix of active and chilled times carries on – walking and mountain bike routes start just by the site, and you’re also within easy reach of fishing, watersports, botanic gardens and the famed vineyards of the Rioja region.

Local attractions

Stretching your legs is a cinch from this site, whatever your walking or biking style – site staff are full of useful info on hiking routes in the surrounding Sierra de Tuyo and the mountains beyond. For adventure sports, head to Sobrón, half an hour away, which is a hub for all sorts of activities including horse riding, kayaking and climbing. For something a bit gentler, take the 20-minute drive to Santa Catalina Botanical Garden, to see almost 1,000 plant species and wander in the ruins of a 13th-century monastery. It’s also worth heading over here after dark, as this is Spain’s first certified Starlight Park – come over of an evening for planetarium sessions and nocturnal guided tours. A little further away (but still less than an hour’s drive) are the city of Bilbao and the famed wineries of the Rioja region, several of which offer tours and tastings.
