What a place for family breaks. With a spectacular mountain backdrop near Las Fuentes del Algar, Camping Fonts de l’Algar has loads to keep kids entertained, from a natural swimming pool to a playground for toddlers and Algar Aventura park, where older kids can tackle zipwires and climbing walls (protective harness provided…). On top of that, the site is well placed for days out: it's just five minutes’ walk to DinoPark Algar and half an hour’s drive to Costa Blanca beaches at Benidorm and Altea. As well as ensuring the kids are having a good time, keeping fed and watered is easy too. Snacks and drinks are available all day from the café with a suntrap terrace, where tasty traditional paella rice dishes are served up until 9pm (booking in advance required). There’s also a barbecue area where you can grill up feasts (buy wood on site) and a picnic spot sheltered by trees. Pick up goodies from the basics store on site or head to supermarkets in the mountain town of Callosa d’en Sarrià (10 minutes’ drive). The practicalities: spotless showers and toilets have access for the mobility impaired, and you can keep holiday clothes clean in the laundry room with washing machines and tumble dryers.

Local attractions

Treat the kids to a day at DinoPark Algar (five minutes’ walk), or head down to the Med for jet skiing and snorkelling off the sandy beaches of Benidorm. If you fancy spending the day somewhere a bit more sedate, go swimming off the pebble beaches at Altea (both half an hour’s drive) and tuck into a tapas supper in the cobbled streets of its photogenic whitewashed old town. Back at base, explore scenic mountain landscapes on horseback, while hardy souls can try canyoning or abseiling into the Algar river for a spot of wild swimming in pristine mountain waters. You can also discover the rugged foothills on two wheels – rent bikes at the campsite if you’ve left yours at home. For awesome views right down to the coast, follow the Sierra de Bernia walking route up to Fort de Bernia (two hours’ walk), built to defend the region from the Moors in the 16th century.

Liked: Near the fonts attraction
Good trekking if one is very fit
Comfortable campsite
Not too full

Disliked: Nothing was open around us mind you we did arrive on a Sunday but even in the Monday no shops or bar was open after 6pm on Monday night

Liked: The location is nice. Pitches for tents are mostly flat, some have trees shade. Stuff is friendly.

Disliked: Showers and restrooms need to be improved. They are too small, poorly maintained and there is no privacy at all.
In tent pitches you can periodically smell sewage.

Disliked: Steile oprit naar de camping , sanitair schoon maar gedateerd, Steile trappen naar het sanitair gebouw.
