  • At the foot of a volcano in the Garrotxa Volcanic Zone Natural Park
  • A minute's walk from rides and amusements at Lava Parc
  • Animal farm, pool and garden
Your Spanish holiday here should bubble along here nicely. Catalonia's Camping Lava is a splendidly set site at the foot of the Garrotxa volcanoes deep in the Garrotxa Volcanic Zone Natural Park: crater connoisseurs, your place is here. It's also a mere minute's amble from the site to the amusements of Lava Parc, where you and your littlies can take a train around the volcanic zone, zip about on Segways or 4X4 tours, cuddle animals at the farm, or canter about by pony or horseback. The fortified medieval town of Santa Pau, dating back to Roman times, is a few minutes' drive away for urban sightseeing around this lush landscape, Olot is within 15 minutes and Girona is reachable in an hour. Camping Lava is a spacious site surrounded by greenery, with pitches shaded by trees. There's an animal farm with critters to greet and feed here too, as well as room aplenty to sunbathe around the grounds and in the handsome garden area surrounding the pool. Entertainment is organised during the summer season. An outdoor barbecue area is open throughout the season, and fresh bread deliveries are available daily

Electric forest floor tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: The shade and green vegetation in and around the campsite The pool area The cleanliness of the toilets The surrounding area of La Garrotxa Wifi Roofed rainshelters in camping area

Disliked: Check-in took too long (?understaffed reception) and we were told at reception that we needed to wait for someone to show us our pitch, though this was not necessary (and probably was a mistake as we had a tent and not a campervan/caravan). A shop with more product range and extension hours would have been preferible.

Electric forest floor motorhome pitch

Electric forest floor motorhome pitch

Liked: Local area

Disliked: Awkward pitches.Parking in between trees. Pedantic member of staff asked us to reverse 1 m so we were within the white markers. There was 1 other campervan on the whole site.Lava was the most expensive site we had stayed in,in our six week trip.€34 per night

Electric forest floor motorhome pitch

Disliked: No puc opinar res en contra

Electric forest floor tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: The calmness of the area and the fact that you can just choose a spot to pitch up with a tent. The carriage ride is well worth doing as well as a visit to the river in Santa Pau. Marta the receptionist is amazingly helpful! Very good customer service.

Disliked: Lack of information regarding acitivites around the site e.g prices and facilities available.

Electric forest floor tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: The camping space is lovely and the area is great, its clean and simple, and space for large tents. Not to crowded.

Disliked: The staff did the minimum, and there was often no paper in the toilets, there was no hot water in the sinks to wash your hands or in the sinks to wash pots or clothes. Everything was expensive, the restaurant was closed and the kids park was poor . I was charged 10e extra a night because my tent was big though this was not mentioned when i booked despite giving measurements. Everything that was open shut early including the pool that was shut by 7PM, ridiculous in the summer. A shame as with a few small changes it would be a lovely site.

Local attractions

The volcanoes are the hottest highlights around this part of Catalonia and Girona: a full 40 are scattered around the Garrotxa Volcanic Zone Natural Park's 12,000 hectares, dating back around 700,000 years (fret not re eruptions: the last was 11,000 years ago and the region's volcanoes are now all dormant). Take the miniature train around the volcanic area and the Croscat volcano, the youngest and highest volcano around the Iberian Peninsula. Mining operations here have left a large section of its side exposed, so if you're bubbling over with eagerness to see what the inside of a volcano looks like, take your camera and your curiosity here. Hire a 4x4 near Camping Lava to drive around the craters on your own tour, or cool down with a horse-drawn carriage ride around the lush Fageda Jorda forest, which grows on lava flow from the Croscat volcano three kilometres from the site.
