  • Quiet campsite in a rural area close to the source of the Asón river
  • Surrounded by caves; within an hour's drive of Santander and Bilbao
  • On-site café and restaurant for meals and snacks
Located in the peaceful area of Ramales de la Victoria, close to the border between Cantabria and the Basque Country, Camping Ramales is a pleasant spot set over three hectares with well-maintained amenities and easy access to the surrounding countryside. Half of this green and rural site is made up of native woodland, with chestnut, hazel, oak and beech trees, so there are plenty of peaceful shaded areas and lots of wildlife waiting to be explored. As you emerge from the trees, you'll be treated to spectacular mountain views, while a few metres away there is also the river Asón, where local kids head to paddle in the summer. With scenery like this, you'll have plenty of choice when it comes to finding a picnic spot… Carrying on along the river bank, you can either head to the source of the Asón river or stroll into the centre of Ramales de la Victoria, an attractive little town with lots of grand colonial-era houses, several well-reviewed restaurants and a handful of food shops and supermarkets if you need to stock up on essential supplies. You can also stick around on site to eat, though, as Camping Ramales has a café and restaurant for drinks and snacks closer to home.

Electric optional grass tent or campervan pitch

Liked: Location, good facilities which were clean, hot showers that weren’t on a push button ( always a bonus) easy walk into the town.

Disliked: The pitches were a bit cramped together under the trees.

Electric optional grass tent or campervan pitch

Electric optional grass tent or campervan pitch

Liked: Small site with big pitches - perfect for camper van plus awning/tent. V clean showers/ facilities. Fantastic bar/ restaurant with great menu and v good value. Trees everywhere. 25 mins easy walk to Ramales. Mitchelin guide restaurant superb 45euro tasting menu. Lots of bars and restaurants. Tourist info centre v helpful. Completed R1 walking trail ( easy for Spanish - demanding for us!) and visited the spectacular cave. A good 3-4 day stop . Very friendly & helpful staff in bar and reception.

Electric optional grass tent or campervan pitch

Liked: A wonderful peaceful campsite in the woods. Getting back to nature The owner and his staff were a godsend when we had problems with our campervan and needed translations for the garage and breakdown man. One of the girls managed to get an earlier booking with a garage. We were due to leave on the Sunday but as we needed to wait for breakdown vehicle Monday, we were allowed to stay another night. Nothing was too much trouble A BIG thank you to you and all your staff who were all very professional and friendly. The food at the restaurant was also tasty and very reasonable. Would definitely return if I was passing through this way again

Disliked: None.

Electric optional grass tent or campervan pitch

Liked: Very beautiful surroundings. Very helpful and friendly staff. Delicious excellent value meals.

Disliked: They correctly discourage motorhomes as the approaches are steep, some pitches slippery and not level. But fine for camper vans.

Local attractions

The landscape surrounding Ramales de la Victoria is dotted with mountains and caves. Take a hike up to the top of the Pico del Carlista mountain (20 minutes' drive) and visit the spectacular Pozalagua caves or stick to the caverns and viewpoints around town like the Covalanas caves (10 minutes), where you can explore prehistoric cave paintings on guided tours. The local area is also known for its adventurous side, with potholing, climbing, canoeing and via ferrata high ropes trails all on offer close by (ask your hosts for more details). Other less adrenaline-fuelled attractions can also be found in the surrounding countryside, though, with popular choices including the lovely Santuario de la Bien Aparecida church (25 minutes) and BBK Karpin Fauna (20 minutes), an animal shelter. Camping Ramales also has the benefit of being close to northern Spain's big port cities like Santander (50 minutes) and Bilbao (an hour). The former is less of a tourist hotspot than the latter, although it's still worth making the trip for walks along the Paseo de Pereda with its gorgeous views over the Atlantic, or for lazy days on its several sandy beaches.
