Whether you're thinking of going on a week of waterfall hikes or spending the weekend lazing by the pool, River Lodge Fahala in Andalusia is certainly going to sound attractive. Set in Valle Guadalhorce, a lush green valley with rivers, lakes, hikes and rock climbing, it has an outdoor swimming pool and a huge green space of its own. The lush gardens are by a tributary of the river Fahala. A scattering of fruit and nut trees adds plenty of shade, and the communal outdoor kitchen (also used as a party space) is also shaded by large eucalyptus trees. And then there’s that pool for hours of lazing and lounging… overlooking the river, it is behind a lounge area and a cute outdoor bathroom. All this talk of eucalyptus trees and valleys might make you think you’re far from society, but River Lodge Fahala is in fact half an hour’s walk from the shops, bars and restaurants in Alhaurín el Grande. There’s also a bus stop right outside the house which has a direct connection to Málaga (taking an hour and five minutes). Here, you’re also in pole position for getting out into the Parque Natural Sierra de Grazalema. Accessible with a 15-minute drive or so, the gorges, caves, waterfalls and mountains will be music to the ears for those coming to the site for a weekend or more of outdoor adventures.

Local attractions

Málaga, Málaga… this well-known city is on everyone’s tongues, and conveniently, it’s easy to get to from River Lodge Fahala. Málaga (an hour and five minutes’ bus or 35 minutes’ drive) has hilltop citadels, a Renaissance cathedral and terraces full of tapas restaurants. Keener to reach a destination which has hiking trails and other outdoor endeavours? Try El Chorro (50 minutes), a huge rock-climbing destination, or El Burgo (50 minutes), a village at the start of a nine-kilometre river and waterfall hike. El Torcal de Antequera (an hour and five minutes) is seriously impressive too, with huge limestone rocks and splendid walking trails all around them. Still in hiking mode? A popular waterfall hike with swimming holes is Barranco Blanco (15 minutes). Charco de la Virgen (45 minutes) is quite easygoing too, so pack a picnic for the whole family. When it’s time to go south towards the Costa del Sol coast, you might want to make time to stop off in Mijas (20 minutes), with its typical white Andalusian houses.
