Camping Alto de Viñuelas: Swimming pool

General

  • Spectacularly scenic site overlooking the Sierra Nevada mountains
  • Bus stop right outside the site for 25-minute rides into Granada
  • Pool, bar and terrace restaurant serving tapas dishes

The splendid views from Camping Alto de Viñuelas have been raved about aplenty by previous guests: the site looks out over the smashing Sierra Nevada mountains, in a wildlife haven of grassy areas and trees.

This site is in a most handy spot for visiting Granada too, with a stop right outside served by a bus that takes a mere 25 minutes to reach the city. Friendly staff are on hand to book tickets on your behalf to Granada’s spectacular palace and fortress complex of Alhambra, and will also happily point out where in the city you need to catch the bus back to base.

The park is simple but well set out, with an outdoor pool and neighbouring paddling pool, and a terrace restaurant serving up local dishes (the local sausage is highly recommended) and tons of tapa plates. Again, the views from here are spectacular, but should ever the weather become inclement, you can hole up cosily by the fireplace indoors.

When a wander off site for supplies takes your fancy, head down the hill toward the local town of Beas De Granada, which has two small but well-stocked supermarkets from which to pick up supplies to barbecue back at base, plus a friendly local bar that serves tapas bits and drinks. On Sunday afternoons, a van selling rotisserie chicken and fries is in the town square.

Please note

The outdoor swimming pool is open between 01/05 and 15/09 (subject to weather conditions).

The restaurant is open between 01/01 and 31/12.

Extremely personable and eager to help in enjoying our time there, lovely little site 25 minute bus ride to Alhambra, less than 4 euro for two each way and on time!
Restaurant excellent with typical local cuisine, and a tapa served with every drink bought, excellent value!

Garrido the receptionist, well he managed and did most of the work on the whole site, he was always on hand to give advice and help when needed (you will need to brush up on your Spanish however, his sons speak a little English).

The communal area is kept very clean, loads of hot water, but I showered in cold water as it is very hot at this time of the year.

    Great electric supply.

Great swimming pool, this was alright as the site capacity was very low however, if they were to be on half or full capacity it could prove to be too crowded, maybe consider enlarging pool and put an opening leading directly to the restaurant, you could probably serve drinks and snacks by the pool?

We were allowed to select our own pitch (not too many bookings due to Covid 19)

You could get a bus right outside the campsite entrance (in the car park of the campsite restaurant) to Granada city center everyday (the bus did not run on Saturday for what reason we do not know, misunderstanding maybe), it cost 1.85 euros per person each way, it took about 20 minutes to get there, great place to visit, loads of historic buildings.

The campsite restaurant serves great food, we ate there twice during our 5 night stay. The restaurant also sells ice creams, beverages and food to takeaway. The restaurant is used by the locals also, so ensure to book your table to avoid a long wait.

In the reception you could put your freezer blocks in the freezer to freeze everyday, we also put bottles of water in there for our days out (its very hot at this time of the year).

You could walk to the local village Beas (took about 15 minute stroll). There is a great restaurant on the left called Restaurante La Pradera, we went there twice during the day for a few drinks and tapas (every drink included a free tapas). There's also a couple of supermarkets, great to stock up, a hardware shop and a smaller bar.

    Disliked:

The pitch grounds are very hard
Communal area requires cosmetic updating but functions perfectly
    Pool requires cosmetic updating

Most pitches are rocky and unsuitable for tents - this would have been a problem if nearly full campsite. A guard dog next to our pitch (site owners) constantly barked and woke us early every morning.

Small, friendly campsite, with clean toilets and showers.
Easy access to Granada on the 300 bus (1.80€ each way)
Must visit the town and the Alhambra. We also visited Sierra Nevada ski resort, hiked the gorge in Monatril and the beach at Playa Rijana (pretty stony cove with snorkelling)

Peaceful location surrounded by stunningly beautiful scenery, helpful staff, good food from restaurant, clean toilets & showers - plenty of hot water and great water pressure. After travelling through France & Spain this was my favourite campsite that we stayed at. Very cheap WiFi, which is a little slow at times, but on the whole worked very well.

    Disliked:

Pitches a little on the small side, but we did manage to squeeze our 14foot caravan and awning into it, but had to park our vehicle elsewhere on site.

Local attractions

Walks and cycling routes are available directly from the site, such as one between Beas and Granada, with some of the area’s most spectacular views over the Sierra Nevada mountain range. The narrow ravines, steep cliffs, natural springs and deep dark caves of the Sierra de Huétor Natural Park are an easy 20-minute amble away too.

If you’re handy on a bike – or fancy a three-hour hike – the park’s most renowned spring, Fuente Grande, is around 12 kilometres away, and is so famed as its waters were transported by the Moors to Granada’s Albaicín palace… which is also an excellent spot for a sightsee, and accessed via a 25-minute bus ride that picks guests up from right outside the site.

If you’re planning on having a car on your hols, a trip should most certainly be made to the Cueva del Agua, which can be reached in about 40 minutes.
