  • Pretty farm site on the River Breede, set among lush green nature
  • Under 15 minutes’ drive to Bonnievale and 30 to Robertson Wine Valley
  • Swimming, canoeing, fishing and birdwatching available at the park
For serene stays in South Africa, base yourself on the banks of the Breede River at swish farm site River Goose Camp Site – it’s all about the restful vibes when unwinding under the shade of native trees at this stunning spot in the Western Cape. Peaceful pastimes like swimming, fishing, canoeing and birdwatching are to be had in or beside the water in the lush green setting of River Goose Camp Site, excellent activities to partake in ahead of a barbecue using the park’s braai facilities. Sit and soak up the ambience as the scent of grilled food fills the air and ponder life (or just plan the places you’ll visit in this area at the foot of the Langeberg and Riviersonderend mountains when not chilling out). The local town’s just as low-key as the park: Bonnievale, less than 15 minutes' drive, is quieter than many other Breede River settlements as it’s not directly on the popular Route 62 wine trail. Yet it’s still close to vineyards – the region isn’t known as the Valley of Cheese and Wine for nothing – with four cellar doors, four estates and two private producers around. The washrooms at this site have flushing toilets, showers and hot water. There’s no electricity – it’s all about that back-to-basics feel – and much of the park is accessible to wheelchairs.

Local attractions

If all that relaxing has you ready and raring for adventures, chat with site staff about boat trips on the river and 4x4 rides around the area. You could also head off to Soekershof in Robertson of your own accord (25 minutes’ drive) to peruse the plants in the 10 hectares of mazes, or meander to Marloth Nature Reserve near the small town of Swellendam (half an hour) and hike along one of its seven trails. Step into the Swellendam State Forest, just next door, for paths up to the Clock Peaks – get ready to feel the burn as they’re pretty steep – or wander on the laidback Doktersbos, Hermitage and Duiwelsbos routes with beady eyes kept open for spotting the antelope, leopards and mongoose that call this area home. Birdwatcher? Watch out for creatures such as the black eagle, wood owl and Cape vulture as well. If you’re keen to get on the green, Robertson Golf Club (35 minutes) has an 18-hole course surrounded by towering mountains; those who prefer to chomp on cheese than work on their swing might want to get their fill at the Parmalat (five minutes) or Mooivallei Suiwel (15 minutes) factories instead.
