- Small family-friendly waterside resort at Umtentweni in KwaZulu-Natal
- Leopard Rock and Oribi Gorge Nature Reserve both 40 minutes’ drive
- Swimming pool, kids’ gym and zipwire; communal braai with lagoon views
Set on the outskirts of the small coastal resort of Umtentweni, Tweni Lagoon Resort is handily situated for exploring the unspoiled beaches and countryside of the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast. This modern, family-friendly park with welcoming staff has spotless shower facilities, a garden brightened by eccentric artworks and a small swimming pool for cooling dips.
The resort is tucked under trees on the edge of the lagoon, and is well protected from the winds and harsh weather sometimes experienced on the south coast. Port Shepstone (10 minutes’ drive) has supermarkets for topping up on provisions as well as a sprinkling of fast-food joints, but back at the resort there’s a communal braai with stunning views over the lagoon if you fancy barbecuing up an alfresco feast.
Youngsters will keep themselves busy in the jungle gym, try out the zipwire, let off excess energy on the trampoline and feed the many waterfowl and peacocks that live around the place. There’s a pool table and volleyball court, and you can fish in the lagoon or hire a canoe to paddle downstream to the Indian Ocean in about 10 minutes. Other occasional activities at Tweni include outdoor yoga sessions and face-painting for the kids.

Local attractions
Southern KwaZulu-Natal’s renowned Oribi Gorge Nature Reserve (40 minutes’ drive) should be on your sightseeing schedule. You can take a selfie at the precarious Leopard Rock, clamber up to Samango Falls or book a guided tour to view the protected colony of rare Cape vultures that inhabit the canyon.
Lake Eland Game Reserve (50 minutes) is a diverse area of bushveld, coastal forests and wetland home to iconic wildlife including zebras and giraffes, which can be witnessed on guided game drives. Those of you with a taste for adrenaline sports can also try the gorge swing, zipwiring, white-water rafting and abseiling in the reserve.
If you’re happy to stay closer to home base, Sea Park Beach is a sandy stretch known for its spectacular sunsets. You can spot playful dolphins from the Whale Deck – Umtentweni Conservancy (both five minutes) for most of the year, while whales are more commonly observed between May and December.
