  • Well-located resort a 30-minute walk to Lake Nhlange in Kosi Bay
  • A 20-minute drive to Manguzi and 25 to the iSimangaliso Wetland Park
  • Restaurant, kitchen, pool and bar plus organised boat and 4x4 trips
This swish place is well set up for a hol down at lake level in Kosi Bay among the four bodies of water that make up this ace area… Kosi Bay Casitas Bush Lodge puts on boat and 4x4 tours to get you out and about soaking up the scenery in the scenic coastal setting of KwaZulu-Natal. For slower days when you’ve not booked yourself a trip, the park’s a 30-minute walk from Lake Nhlange in an area known for its stellar swimming, fishing and snorkelling. All the lakes are connected by sandy channels that lead to the Kosi Bay mouth, for dips in the shallow water of the estuary around a rocky reef with the traditional Thonga fish traps set up to feed communities close by all around. To catch a look at creatures on land as well as underwater, head to the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, a 25-minute drive away, to spot the hippos, crocodiles and flamingos settled around Lake St Lucia. Elephants, giraffes and leopards also call the grasslands and forests of this part of the Western Shores and Charters Creek areas home. When you’re not seeking exotic animals or bouncing about in a boat on the water, the park’s a restful place for cooling off in the outdoor swimming pool or lying back with a book under the indigenous trees while waiting for the braai to heat up. Rather prep food the traditional way? A handy shared kitchen is on site with a gas stove and hot water for washing up; supplies are available in Manguzi, 20 minutes' drive away. Or how about having someone else cook for you…? A restaurant is at this park and you can book meals of pizzas, curries and South African classics with a tipple or two at the bar. Safe drinking water comes from the borehole on site and the communal tiled bathrooms are nicely spacious.

Local attractions

Coastal forests and mangrove swamps are also ripe for exploring in the Kosi Bay area along with surfable beaches; if you’re into angling, cast out at the lakes and you could come home with specimens including kingfish, grunter and snapper. More swayed by birdwatching? Keep your eyes peeled for the palm-nut vultures that soar through the skies around KwaZulu-Natal or dive underwater to see devil firefish, parrotfish, cowfish and giant turtles. If you’re in South Africa to get up close and personal with bigger animals, game reserves are in the area – ask at the park about the best way to sort a safari at one of these.
