It's free, quick and easy!
- Small and rural family-friendly site in the Carpathian foothills
- Cozia Monastery 50 minutes’ drive; Ocnele Mari Salt Mine half an hour
- Pétanque and badminton available; easy access from E81 main road
If it’s your goal to take a break well away from the tourist trail, perhaps it’s time to consider La Livada. This leafy, relaxed family site is hidden away among apple orchards in the Vâlcea region of the Carpathian foothills, well away from any sign of mass tourism but close to the many spectacular attractions of western Romania.
Close to the sleepy village of Linia Hanului village, La Livada is easily accessed off the main E81 road (10 minutes’ drive) connecting with Sibiu in the north and Bucharest to the south-east.
Families can be kept happily entertained on site playing pétanque and badminton, or cosying up around the campfire for alfresco meals when the weather behaves. Go hiking or cycling direct from your pitch, however, and right away you’re in a region steeped in history and legend, dotted with forests, rivers and centuries-old monasteries.
Five minutes’ drive takes you to a scattering of food shops, plus a couple of bars and restaurants if you'd rather have someone else sort out dinner and drinks. The same distance away by car is Muzeul Memorial Nicolae Bălcescu, celebrating the life of the famous Romanian revolutionary and poet.

Local attractions
As well as hiking and cycling on Ferma la florika (five minutes’ drive) trails or along the forest tracks in Pădurea Gâltofani Scenic Forest (20 minutes), active types can go fishing on the Topolog river (10 minutes ) and take a dip in the Olt river at Călimănești (45 minutes) or in the spa town’s several hot springs. Another pretty hillside settlement is Băile Olănești (50 minutes) – a place of naturally heated thermal waters and woodland walks.
To admire more natural wonders, head for the dramatic Lotrișor Waterfall in Cozia National Park (an hour), and for things manmade, tour the ornate 14th-century Cozia Monastery (50 minutes) to see its jewel-like stained-glass and well-preserved frescoes. Another historic monastery is found at Curtea de Argeș (40 minutes), and for underground wonders, visit the dazzling caverns at Ocnele Mari Salt Mine (half an hour).
Longer jaunts by car or bike take you north to the Transfăgărășan mountain pass (three hours); take a few pictures when you’ve got to the top just to prove you were brave enough to navigate the famous switchbacks.
