Whether you’re travelling around Eastern Europe on a long trip or picking a southern Romania base for a couple of weeks, stick Camping București Belvedere on your list of potentials.
This site is inside a well-equipped resort within driving distance of the centre of Bucharest, with easy access to the nearest ring road for travelling around the region, and is a scenic place surrounded by three lakes and with paths lined in lush vegetation.
If you’re not on a driving trip, the park’s close to public transport links and staff can organise tours around the country: choose from guided trips into Romania's capital or ask about those heading to the northern mountains and the eastern coastline.
For DIY travel, the city centre’s Palatul Parlamentului – a communist-era government building that’s also the biggest parliament in the world – is around 30 minutes’ drive and is close to many of the other main urban sights; north of here (55 minutes) are green spaces like King Mihai I Park with its watersports lake.
Not planning on veering far? Access to a swimming pool (between Mondays and Thursdays), a barbecue area for parties with friends, a 24-hour supermarket, wifi and a restaurant means you won’t necessarily need to, plus a beach is by the fishing lake for sunbathing with a good book. Guests can use the tennis courts, volleyball and badminton too, and parties are often planned in the evenings by staff.
This pet-friendly site also has typical amenities like shared bathrooms and showers as well as a laundry area.

Local attractions
Bucharest has plenty to keep you occupied, from the Parisian-style Cișmigiu Park in the centre (30 minutes’ drive) to the lively nightlife in the Lipscani district. Eastern Orthodox churches also fill the capital of Romania: keep an eye out for Stavropoleos Church in the Old City and poke your head inside to see its wall paintings and carved doors.
The centre's fifth-century Curtea Veche palace is where Vlad The Impaler – famed as being the inspiration for Dracula – ruled from. To see the place said to be his burial spot head out of town towards the pretty village of Snagov (an hour and 15 minutes) and row to the monastery in the middle of the lake. For hiking, the hills of Prahova valley are about an hour and a half's drive.
Meanwhile, other worthwhile sights like the spire-topped Peles Castle in the foothills of the Carpathian Mountains and the Slanic Prahova Saline salt mines take a couple of hours to reach.
